Played this game like crazy on game pass, bout time I got it here.

150 hours and maxed achievements should tell you how amazing this title is.

A must buy if you enjoy crunching numbers and being strategic while trying to make OP combos.

I really like the Unit + Floor system and some of the upgrades can go hard, there is also a nice balance of being able to pick certain cards to tailor your build so you don't feel locked in to just 1 strategy. Playing this after it went on sale has me excited for the upcoming Monster Train 2.

I also really like the music, it's super atmospheric and fills the silence, usually I mute music and after listening, I did not so this is definitely a point in its favor. Some people do not like the art/style but I think it's very nice looking and the animations lively for a skeletal system, not too stiff. A lot of the card art is pretty forgettable, there are a few standouts that look very good though.

This is one of those games where you'll either play 20 hours of it and never think about it again or you'll play hundreds of hours and it will never leave your recently played queue.

It is endlessly replayable. Every time you load up a game it feels different and you will have to adapt your deck building strategy on the fly. It is a text book example of not judging a book by it's cover because there is a depth of gameplay hiding behind its simple facade that is breathtaking.

Shame on me for not writing a review for this years ago. Loved the heck out of this game when I played this. I would dare say that it might be as good as - if not better in some ways than - Slay the Spire. If you are a fan of Slay the Spire, you owe it to yourself to at least try this. I just saw the announcement for the sequel and had to come back and add another positive review to the much earned list. I can only hope that the sequel lives up to my love for the first... Too many disappointing followups recently (looking at your launch state, Civ 7, Orcs Must Die Deathtrap, and STALKER 2!)

This is the best mobile game ever made.

You know every time you downloaded a mobile game? this is the game you were hoping to get. Instead, you got something much worse. Why do I call this a mobile game?

The style is extremely generic. Everything this game does is copy other games in the past. There is one piece of originality in this game though, and that's the FIRE soundtrack. It's got no business being so insanely good, and with more originality than the rest. It still draws a lot of influence from old school beats, rock & metal as well as classic video game soundtrack. The producer has done a fabulous job with the mix. The dynamics of each song is very impressive. I can play this game alone just for the music, and the way it fits each boss and level.

Now back to gameplay. It's of course satisfying, it's a polished game that doesn't seem to have any clear weak link. In the world of roguelites that focuse on big (and bigger) numbers, Monster Train achieves what it's trying to do. It's very similar to for example Slay The Spire, where there's a lot of room for wombo-combos and finding something that is completely OP. In some ways, I miss the simplicity of Hearthstone when it came out, where each number matters, and an advantage of 2 or 3 is seen as massive. Instead, Monster Train is a game with so big numbers and so many elements to keep track of that you really can't do the math each time you make a play. It's more fast paced. That is also a good thing, since many of us are impatient and don't want to sit around doing math all the time.

Even if they have accessibility options for people with eye strain, photosensitivity and epilepsy, it doesn't do enough for me. After a couple of playthroughs I sorely need a break. There's just too much happening on the screen at the same time. The movements are way too fast, too many colors, too much bloat. But as you can see from the above, it doesn't take away from the satisfaction of the gameplay and soundtrack. That said, just making each character attacks ranged attacks, instead of them moving all over the screen to make a melee attack and back would help massively.

I beat the game on the standard difficulty with the wildest combo that I can get each time I play. Later, I'll keep playing in the future to unlock more stuff and try to beat the game with harder difficulties.
