This game was deep in my memories. It seems so obscure, but it should be renowned the world over. It has everything I like: Guns, anime women, religious imagery, horrific gore, deeply involved gunplay, platforming, upgrades, sweet characters, and one of the most unique, efficient, and breathtaking graphical directions out of any game. There's some minor bugs, and I recommend adjusting the controller settings in steam input. After that, the game is a thrill to beat! The "easy" difficulty is at least as hard as classic DOOM's "Ultra Violence", so starting there will give you a very satisfying climb up the difficulty ladder.

Let's get it out of the way: yes, the game features loads of guro; yes, it is a fetish thing; yes, it is a good game.

This game was way more fun than I anticipated. I played the demo not thinking much of it, but I got hooked. At the base is a good ol' doom but with light tactical elements, good weapon feel and unique look. And yes, it's stylistic decisions are extremely strong and will turn away quite a few people, but it's also its charm.

The looks of it stop being shocking quite fast, and after that all you have left is the gameplay itself. It's rough in a sense that not all levels and weapons are equal. Some levels are straight up bangers and some leave the feeling of "that's it?", the same goes for weapons. Normal levels can be easily completed only with meta-magnum and an AR, and the boss levels don't require much more than a rocket launcher. The bosses themselves are pretty much the same except the looks and don't require special tactics outside of strafing and periodically jumping while dumping as much lead as possible.

Sometimes you get levels featuring a usable mech and destructable buildings which is quite fun after being nimble and fragile. With or without mech, the game is pretty easy. This isn't helped by enemies mostly standing in place and throwing some kind of projectile in your direction. Those who actually walk towards you usually get noticed from the distance rendering their approach useless.

But somehow it all works. The enemies, the levels, the weapons - it all comes together to be greater than the some of its parts. It's still rough, but it's fun. Coming after sequel, the game is way less complex, but it's fun in a doom way - you get something familiar but with a special sauce on top: you run through the level firing your weapons at mach speed, switching between them as needed, frantically reloading and maneuvering between enemies to collect ammo. In the end, all that is left are guts and barely recognizable bodies of those that used to be denizen of what used to be earth.

The plot is not really that important. It gets expanded in the sequel way more, but it's still nice to have some somewhat criptic background to everything happening here.

I really think you should play this one first, because it's still good and fun, yet way simpler (not worse, but simpler) in every regard. So in the end it's still worth your attention.

Honestly, I haven't played many shooters, especially not any classic "boomer shooters." This is as close as I've gotten to playing one. That said, I think this game is worth playing if you have a similar gaming background. It's a pretty straightforward, no-frills shooter, but the gunplay still feels nice. Most of the enemies are pretty dumb, squishy, and helpless to kill you on their own, but it's cool to mow down hordes of them while carrying your full arsenal of weapons. Oh, and there's a bit of jank but it doesn't interfere with the gameplay.

By the way, a lot of the reviews joke about the NSFW art in this game, but it's not that bad. The playable character, The Martyr, seems dressed similar to how 2B was dressed in Nier Automata with only her white leotard. The most you see of her will be on the title screen, and you'll only see her in-game if you look down (and crouch). There's NSFW Guro art that's pretty tame. I suppose you should stay away from this game if you're a bearded 30-something engineer who bikes to work, drinks water out of mason jars, and always wears newsboy caps, because you're too normal for it.
