PC Gamer's write up put it best when they closed their review with the line:

"Gun-Dog is a fine ambassador for the PC-98, the adventure genre as a whole, but most importantly of all: itself. Good ideas, done well, are timeless."

Timeless is absolutely right- despite all the visual hallmarks of the era it's evoking, Gun-Dog does an excellent job of telling a story that doesn't rely exclusively on those tropes or expectations from the eras/genres that clearly inspired it.

As someone without a meaningful nostalgic connection to the genre of PC-98 adventure games from Japan (or really visual novels in general), this game still rapturously demands your attention and focus with excellent characters, captivating art, and a compelling central mystery that does its characters justice.

Regardless of your background, if you enjoy brilliantly told stories, mech anime, or any of the other hallmarks of classic science fiction, you will have a blast with Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog.

As a fan of Gundam 0083 this game hits all the right notes for me. The character designs and attitudes of the cast of the Gun-Dog are exactly what you expect from mecha animes of that era. The jackets really capture the 0083 vibe perfectly for me as well. The art and music also beautifully capture the old space combat games of early 90s like Wing Commander while polishing them up. Lots of good little easter eggs hidden around as well. I am only about an hour in, and I can not wait to see how the story unfolds. Definitely recommended for fans of this era.

Great game, I wish it was longer. The narrative ends on a cliffhanger.
