Murdered Soul Suspect is a really well made detective game. I love that this old game had a great concept, clean animations, with working subtitles. You play as a ghost, working to solve different cases in the Town of Salem, learning about the different stories and murders that occurred. I had so much fun playing it, finding over 200 collectibles too. Definitely recommended, especially if you are into mysteries!

This game had been sitting in my inventory for 7 years untouched, but luckily, after a recent recommendation from a friend on Steam, I gave it a try and loved it.

According to Steam, Soul Suspect was released in 2014. Playing it over a decade later, I was surprised by how good the graphics still look, the animations and cutscenes are just as solid. Beyond that, it tells an engaging and thrilling story that could easily be adapted into a great adventure/mystery novel.

Player's character is a ghost of a detective who was murdered by a mysterious person, the entire gameplay revolves around uncovering the identity of the murderer. At the same time, the local town is being terrorized by a serial killer known as the Bell Killer, and it seems that these murders are connected in some way.

One of the fun aspects of the game is that the player's character can move through walls, which, in most games would be a glitch, but here it's a feature, allowing player to explore the city in a unique way. There are collectibles scattered around the map, the rewards are well-written notes and if all pieces of one set is found, the reward is an exciting ghost story, not just a plain achievement.

The gameplay is a mix of action and detective work. The action part includes exploring places like the church, museum, police station, asylum etc., plus avoiding or killing demons that look like Dementors in the Harry Potter series. The detective part is more traditional: you gather evidence in a limited area, pick 1-3 conclusions best fits in the question you follow, then the story progresses.

What I really appreciated about the story is how it intentionally leads you toward the wrong person, only to throw a series of twists as the murders continue. The pace is well-balanced, answers coming out at a steady rate, making it clear that you’re getting closer to the truth and the real danger. The twist at the end is brilliant and ties up earlier story holes, like why the ghost girl is so afraid of your character. I also enjoyed how the protagonist eventually reunites with his love.

As for the performance, while it’s not perfect, I’m impressed that a game originally designed for Windows 8 runs well on Windows 11 decade later. There’s no built-in option to adjust mouse sensitivity, but you can alter it manually by editing an ini file. I did encounter a game-breaking bug where a priest, who was supposed to walk toward me ended up walking through the walls of the church and got stuck behind some wood. It turned out that enabling vertical sync fixed the issue, though I had it turned off to fix the subtitles and voice sync issue.

Despite these flaws, I really enjoyed the game and would definitely recommend it.

I don't even remember buying this game, it must've sat in my Steam library for years. I picked it up on a whim and was immediately pulled in - I LOVED IT! I'm surprised at how well it holds up in the decade+ since the game's release, and other than a couple of minor bugs and issues here and there, I had a pretty perfect playthrough. There are clues to find, collectibles to search for, creepy locations to visit (the whole game takes place in Salem, MA), and an overall creepy, noir detective vibe that I loved.
