But, for the most part, it seems like the only reason is for achievement purposes, especially in regards to the berry bushes.
The whole game is pointless if you need reason to play. Playing it is like your mom drawing when talk via phone - pointless but for time kill.
It just doesn't seem like the time is weighted proportionally to the rest of the progression paths.
I did end up unlocking all the crops along the way, though. Just don't plant any of the old ones. Take a look and see what crops you still need to unlock the different seeds and only use those. Let Splunt plant other things.
If it helps, my "grindy" farm did not have Forbic or Reaper. Since I got their achievements previously I didn't need them again.
