What's with all the Factorio clones lately?
The automation and factory building genre is pretty niche, there's no question about that. But the amount of Factorio clones that are coming out of the woodwork are insane. Satisfactory had the sense to go 3D, so that set it apart (even though it's literally just 3D Factorio).

Then there was Techtonica, which is underground Satisfactory. Techtonica brought terrain manipulation to the table but was otherwise just identical to Satisfactory except clumsier.

Now there's Shapez, Shapez 2, Factory Town, Block Shop, Learning Factory, Node Farm, Space Trash Scavenger, DSP, Facteroids, Oddsparks (actually a little different, thank god), Automation Station, E T C

Hey, I'm an automation player. Choice is a good thing. However, the same game repeated over and over isn't choice, it's flooding the market. It devalues what little actually exists.

To the devs of these things: Factorio made money, and I know you want money. But can you please try to come up with something original to earn that money? Stop riding good games' coattails.

Holy... :mindblown:
For a while it was just zombies. There are waves of different games with almost the same things.

Yeah, I get the waves. I just wish there was some variety within it. Look at the vampire survivors fad. There were some clones, but there were also some very original takes on the concept, and that's a very simple concept in comparison to Factorio.

Question is, why can't anyone make interesting offshoots of Factorio, rather than clone after clone with a single twist?

To be fair (i) many of those games are not exactly new; and (ii) they are not exactly Factorio clones. As an example, Satisfactory is NOT a 3D Factorio. Yes, they are game in a same/similar genre that part I agree with, so what? The genre is still relatevely niche, 3d shooters/MOBAs/MMORPGs are not dying out, the more choice the better for players.

Err, because people realized the nerds who like Factorio have wallets with lots and lots of money in them just aching for another automation fix.

I know this because I regularly check the automation tab and I have money.
It's just a pity that most of them are utter garbage

I like Factorio and have a fat wallet, and I'm here complaining that the games are clones. That's how we started having this conversation, actually.

If people didn't draw from their inspirations, there would be about 90% less cool things on the planet to choose from.

Not heard of E T C, do you have a link, please?

If you don't want to play them, don't play them. Glad I could solve this problem for you.

You are able to call them clones, but you've not actually played them?

Yeah they introduced this brand new thing called trailers and store pages, where you can research a game's elements before deciding to purchase and play them. It's really helpful, you should look it up!

Thanks for the tips. I don't think those things are brand new but I appreciate the advice.
Factory simulation or optimization games typically involve the efficient conversion of resources into products through a combination of a labor workforce and automated systems.[21][22]
Some of these are closer to business simulations, where the player is challenged to make products in a cost-effective manner by establishing production lines to compete with other virtual competitors, such as in Big Pharma and Good Company.[23]
Other factory simulators are based on open-world survival games, with the goal to build enough parts from raw materials found in the world while fending off hostiles to be able to escape or achieve a very large-scale production target, such as in Factorio, Satisfactory, and Dyson Sphere Program.[24]
Other examples of this genre are Mindustry that combines factory simulation with the tower defense genre and Shapez.io, which has adopted the minimalistic art style of the .io browser games. Other games involve rebuilding industry and maintaining sufficient food resources for your labour force in a post-apocalyptic world, such as Captain of IndustryQuoted text
