Portal and Portal 2: RIDICULOUS LOADING TIMES
Please for the love of god stop replying I was like 12 when I posted this and I can't delete it anymore.
----
I pardon Valve for it-- to be fair it's (obviously) one of the major reason Portal is able to work on even the worst and oldest modern computers (in terms of RAM--this doesn't affect the GPU) -- because the game constantly loads and unloads resources it's able to only take up about 1gb of RAM. However most modern PCs have about 4-8 gb (or 2 if you're really poor.) So shouldn't there be a way to make the game faster?

My suggestion is that Valve add an option to the game, allowing you to downsize the loading time by allowing more game components to remain in memory at once. That way the game won't have to constantly decompress and reload over and over again, hence reducing the wait time almost completely.

If you don't know what I mean, you should study a little on PC hardware. Every gamer has basic knowledge of these terms--mostly because in order to make a lot of new games run on your system properly, you need to know how powerful your PC is.

Nonetheless though, that shouldn't matter here-- this post is mainly targetted towards Valve, and they obviously know what they're doing.

Speed of loading stuff to ram depends on kind of ram, not how much u have it. For me it takes 5 sec to load portal 2 map and 3 sec to load portal 1 maps so I don't see any problem

I have 32 Gigs of DDR4 RAM and I have over 30 min load times.

Loading times are due to your RAM and storage drive speeds.

I understand that, but my point is that Valve should allow MORE data to be in mem. at once, hence, after the game is done starting up and after initial loading, it won't need to refresh on every different stage, and if it does it won't have to load as much (meaning less time consuming results) because some of the data is already there.

Also, for @Riedy: I have tinkered a lot with my settings--there's not really anything i can do there. That's why i suggested here that Valve add a setting that allows it to utilize more resources if available.

Bruh. O-O

slow loading time + overpowered PC (at least in storage and RAM) = WTF?

that must suck

Loading game from SSD is always good idea.

True. SSDs are faster since they're solid state (duh, in the name) and fully electronic.
HHDs have to rely on motors to rotate a platter, so it takes longer to read/write and even find data on a hard disk.

On a side note... FYI, I don't like SSDs too much tho because once they start to die, they break immediately. In a hard disk, when it dies you have several weeks or even months to discover that your drive is dying, and have some time to prepare so you dont lose your data.

Although I think what really matters here is just wethre or not an SSD is available to someone.
If not then maybe try a flash drive? (depending on specs of the external media)

IDK...

What i was thinking was just loading the game as it does, but then when in gameplay it loads stuff in the background for future use, or keeps some data in memory longer rather than unloading it, then reloading it when needed later. It's unneccessary to unload assets when they are still needed later if theres still available room to hold it.

I mean, why do you think cache was invented?
You know, some apps on cell phones use cache to store their ads for future reference, so they can load them faster without having to redownload them, which is most useful in slow connections.

You could get a faster hard drive and upgrade your RAM to DDR4 but it wont do too much

I was just asking Valve for an ASync loading feature, hopefully theyll have it in their next Source based game

SPOILER ALERT: There is no next game or HL3 lol

This thread is over half a decade old. I was still halfway in middle school when I wrote it.

Honestly if your computer struggles to load a game from 2007 this hard you should upgrade to like anything else. My old Thinkpad T510 I made my steam account with can do fine. Pull an office computer out of the garbage or something.
