It's not a matter of years, it's a matter of subject. Cobain had serious mental health, drug, and alcohol problems that played major parts in him taking his own life. That's not something that should be joked about, at least when it comes to real people and especially not without extreme amounts of taste, as with all heavy subject matters. Plus, the vast majority of 9/11 jokes are about the planes hitting the towers, not the victims of 9/11. I think the only 9/11 joke that I've seen where the subject wasn't the planes was in the Postal movie and the punchline was still "look at the planes hit the tower"
