Story

Last Stanza is a slice of life, dramatic visual novel that deals with the consequences of a tragic event from different perspectives.
December, 2009. On a day in the last week of that month, I realized how slowly dripping tears had a shivering yet uneasy feeling. The coming of winter turned the air thin and cold. The clouds blocked out the sunlight that normally reached the ground making it seem as if the sun was absent.

Many days passed and life seemed to return to normal as if nothing had happened. To conceal my anger and confusion and slowly regain control of my thoughts, I opened my heart up to friends old and new to try at any cost to find a new place for myself.

But it is in peaceful moments such as these when even a single seemingly inconsequential action can set up a chain reaction like the endless waves of a once calm ocean turned violent, bringing to the shores of my mind the emotions I had thought were long locked away.

Story

All Eve ever wanted was to protect and preserve the land, but after five years of being a ranger in Yosemite National Park, she’s just about ready to throw in the towel. The people are careless, her co-workers are annoying, and thanks to an increasingly tight budget she can hardly do her job. Fed up and burned out, Eve lashes out, but after being transferred to a remote cabin post in return, she only finds herself more uncertain of the value of being a ranger. Soon after arriving, three strange girls corner her in the cabin. Not only do they claim to live there, but they also say they’re the manifestations of Zion, Yellowstone, and Yosemite National Parks! Are these girls really who they say they are? Why is Yosemite so obsessed with her research? And why does one of them have a volcano on their head? Follow Eve as she gets closer with these spritely cuties that put the “natural” in “supernatural,” and maybe even discovers a new kind of love for the parks.

Happy Valentines day from Calme and Sekai Project, but wait hold on a sec who is this? She's from KARAKARA 2!! More information coming at a future convention!

Calme Column #5 “No. 5 “I love beautiful girls”

I’m almost out of ideas to write about. Hi, I’m Kio. Every time I see p19’s name, it reminds of Persona 5, and makes me want to play the game so badly. I want to play games, eat and sleep, and take trips, as much as I want to, as long as I want to.

By the way, I’m switching to a completely different topic, but let’s talk about Cullen now. There is a big difference between her and the other two characters we discussed.

So what’s different about Cullen? Her clothing? The way she talks? Her age? The answer is no. Among these three girls, Cullen is the only character that was created after the plot was already written. Initially, the heroines Lucia and Aisia were born from an illustration p19 drew, as I mentioned before. However, it is impossible to create the whole story with two girls, and that is why we created Cullen.

Cullen is an older sister-like character who is mean to Leon sometimes, but on the other hand, she cares about everyone deeply. I’m pretty sure that those of you who have played it through probably felt that. She also does various investigations and surveillance. If we can get an opportunity to create another story, it will gradually reveal more about her.

She was an unfamiliar kind of character for p19 to draw, so the character design took a little longer than usual. However, once it became solid, she was able to make Cullen move a lot in fun and interesting ways. You can say the same thing is true of the scenario for her. All of her scenes have high energy, and have big movements in the story. I don’t know if there is going to be a sequel, but if there is one, you can expect her to shine.

Now, here we go: the recurring the topic of food. I think the biggest difference in food between Japan and America is the way you eat meat. While marbled, fatty meat is popular in Japan, in the United States, lean cuts seem the standard. For instance, when I ordered steaks in the U.S., they were usually huge, and a lean cut. I was hesitant at first, but now lean steaks are my favorite kind of cut.

I mostly ordered steaks since I thought that’s a thing you do when you go to the United States, so I don’t really know what kind of characteristics American patties have. I mean, I have had them in burgers, but not by itself. So if I happen to get another chance to visit the United States, that will be on my to-do list. My favorite kind of patty is the ones that Bikkuri Donkey serves. I don’t know where their patties originate from…… Anyway, I hope I can find one that defeats Bikkuri Donkey patty in the United States.

Now, as I said in the beginning, I’m out of topics to talk about. So I have decided to take a break from the KARAKARA column for now. Thank you so much for reading KARAKARA columns, and I would be very, very happy if you play KARAKARA.

Calme Column #4 “I Want to Be Aisia’s Son”

Unlike my fast-paced tweeting speed, I’m very slow at long-form writing ;so, of course, I’m finishing very close to the deadline, as usual. I feel guilty for how foolish I am for not being able to accomplish “10KB” with writing scenarios, even though I can accomplish “10 kills” in a Splatoon match (something I’m still proud of). I received an email bomb earlier that says, “You look like you are having fun on Twitter and Splatoon? (So why haven’t you submitted your work?)” So heeeeelp meeeee. I know it’s all my fault…

Okay. Today, I’m going to talk about Aisia. I told you before that Aisia was created from an illustration p19 drew. The second I saw her for the first time, I had a feeling that Aisia was going to be the main heroine. At that time, she was just drawn in black and white, but I felt like her color had to be pink. Later, when the finished design was completed, OMG, it turned out to be… pink! I feel like the project goes really well when there are many telepathic things like that. (The opposite is also true......)

Okay, let’s stay on topic. My overall image of Aisia was soft, so I decided to communicate that. She’s a cheerful, talkative girl. For instance, if she came upon a lonely person, she would run toward them and hold them; she is kind and warm but also more lonely than anyone else...... Don’t you feel like you have to protect her? I do. These feelings were central to how I built her character image.

As those of you who have played the game know, Aisia is genuine and childlike, but actually reliable at the same time. She is very thoughtful, understands her position, and tries to enjoy her life as much as possible, just like a mom. I want to be her son. I think that’s the main difference between Aisia and Lucia. They are both such good girls, but sometimes, when there are two good girls who care about people and things so deeply, but have different perspectives, there can be conflicts and/or misunderstandings. That’s a central theme in the overall story of KARAKARA. Those of you who haven’t played the game, please do purchase and play it! Now we offer the package version that includes the patch. It’s really good.

I think the one thing you imagine when you think of Aisia is a big red suitcase. I got this idea when I went to the United States. I have someone who I travel with whenever I go to the United States who always brings a giant red suitcase. The first time he opened the suitcase, I was quite surprised to see a smaller suitcase inside that was the same exact design, just like a matryoshka doll. Since the suitcase, large enough for a person to fit inside, was so impressive, I was inspired to give Aisia one just like it. Writers are constantly trying to get ideas from people and things around them; if you know a writer, you shouldn’t let your guard down so easily, since it’s almost certain that they are going to take advantage of such inspiration.

I think now is a good place to switch to the topic of food, as usual. This time, my story about food is going to be a little depressing. Last fall, I went to Atlanta for an event. The event itself was splendid, and I enjoyed it a lot, but the food there was--- honestly, not great. The East Coast and West Coast have amazing dishes that mainly use seafood & vegetables, which actually blew my mind and changed my impression of American food a lot. However, an inland city like Atlanta has a completely different repertoire, which was mostly meats, potatoes, and deep-fried food, which I’m not very fond of. However, the aquarium and Coca-Cola museum were amazing. You have to go there at least once.

After the event in Atlanta, the person who accompanied me suggested that we go to Florida. Florida is a very famous place for sightseeing.
On the drive down there, I got excited that I might be able to eat delicious seafood since it’s really close to the ocean. It was a few hundred miles away from Atlanta, and it took me a half day to get there. Right when we got there, there was a hurricane about to hit, and we barely made it to our hotel room before the rain started!

We went to a restaurant at the hotel, and looked at the menu to find many delicious sounding dishes, including oysters. Since we skipped lunch because we had to hurry to get here, everyone was eager to order before others. The food came pretty quickly after that.

Our tale of food is ultimately a tragedy (comedy?), but anyway, if you want to eat delicious food in the United States, you should always do research on Yelp (A major gourmet information website in the United States)! I’m serious!

Calme Column #3 "Lucia is everyone's wife"

This time, I’m going to spotlight one of the heroines, Lucia!

Hi, I’m Kio, and…it’s so hot! It’s almost the summer festival (comic market) season now, so I imagine you are busy running all over to help preparing for them, just like I am. By the way, aren’t printing companies amazing? I wonder if they have some kind of magical power, since they deliver books and goods on time, even with a crazy, impossible schedule. What would they ever do if they exhausted their magical power?

Enough of this worrisome topic; let’s switch 180 degrees to talk about something so cute in KARAKARA! I’m going to talk about Lucia this time.

As I have mentioned several times previously, this story, KARAKARA, was created because of an illustration p19 drew, featuring a tall girl and a short girl. The short one eventually became Lucia.

At that time, Lucia was a quiet, cool girl who didn’t talk that much and just helped Leon nonstop. (If you are old enough to remember, picture Ruri from Martian Successor Nadesico.) However, once you consider the scenario needed for the story, although it would have been cute (like a tiny animal) if I had written her like that, most of her lines would have been “…………” and I wanted her to talk more since she had such a cute voice. So, with that in mind, I decided to erase everything I wrote including prologue and rewrote it. After that, she became a girl who is much more talkative, and who takes really good care of everyone. She also looks and acts very strong and reliable, but actually easily gets frightened; therefore, when she is alone with Leon, she immediately becomes herself and acts more childlike. That’s how we ended up with this cute creature that makes everyone say ”She is my wife!” I’m so glad that I rewrote it.

This was a good example of modifying a character. Things end up much better this way, and it is worth reevaluating a character when you find out that the scenario doesn’t flow well after you write it. Stories are shaped by characters, so when they aren’t going well, you should suspect the characters that form the stories.

It looks like there is still room where I’m allowed to write more, so let me tell you about another behind-the-scenes thing. On the common route, we left some extra room for Lucia to make up reasons for her to be adorable with Leon between Episode 1 and Episode 2. I actually have a memo of the summary of that scene with me right now… I want to put this out somehow, somewhere, sometime. This is just me showing off, but she is cute. (I’m not even trying to hide how much I love her as a parent.)

Okay, the last time, I started talking about cooking around here, so I’m going to talk about cooking again now. (I’m sorry for this rough transition. I’m this close to the deadline for this column.)
I like clam chowder, so let me tell you about the best clam chowder ever.

This was four years ago, a scenario writer took me with them to Prince Edward island, in the Northeast of Canada, for a work trip. We arrived at the center area of the island, Charlottetown, at night, and the sun was gone. Our guide looked up restaurants reviews on an app that’s like their version of Yelp, and found a bar that served seafood, so we went there. It sounded like people were having a good time in that restaurant, and they served lobster, oyster, etc. I ordered clam chowder without any doubt or hesitation. It didn’t take that long for the food to come, but it was in a tiny fancy grinding-bowl-like dish. I complained that they didn’t serve it in a bigger bowl, and took a bite, and—-I’m sorry that I’m not describing in this in fancier words, but it was so creamy, rich, and fabulous that the complaints I had before melted away. Since then, I haven’t been able to find a better bowl of clam chowder for four years. ～The end～

Calme Column #2 "KARAKARA Released! Moe saves the the world!"

This time, we are going to talk about the setting of KARAKARA!

Hello, this is Kio. It's been a month from the first one already!? Oh god! Time flies!

The progress from the last time is like clearing "Ace Attorney 6" the day after you buy the game at most.

Since I have a feeling that I'm going to get a firebomb thrown at me if I continue talking like this, I'm going to move to KARAKARA now. This entry is about the setting of KARAKARA and future development. However, the problem is that hardly anything about future development has been decided, and that makes it very hard to talk about it at this moment. Well, there is one thing I can tell you. The package version of KARAKARA is going to be released in stores in Japan at the end of this month! Please check either the calme official website or our Twitter account for details.

Now, I'm going to talk a little bit about the setting for the story. As I told you before, we chose the U.S. as the motif. Of course, the level of knowledge is that of someone who has only traveled to the U.S. a few times, so some parts are completely fiction. We put a lot of very Japanese factors, and planted some seeds that we can nourish and set some stuff that we can trigger in case there are going to be any sequels. This time has a comparatively short play time, so I would like you to enjoy intriguing details. There are so many exciting things, like radio towers on the sand and boys’ fantasies; aren’t they inviting? I love it, at least.

I looked at the feedback from people who had played the game, and there are a lot of people who find these mysterious settings very interesting, and that made me so happy. That being said, we can’t make sequels if this doesn’t sell well. So, those of you who purchased and played this game, if you can tell people around you about this game and help spread the word, I would really appreciate it. By the way, about 70% of the feedback on the Steam forum is something to the effect of “Lucia is my wife.” I’m happy that moe like this can overcome the oceans and spread across international borders. I was right: Moe saves the world.

Oh, by the way, when I wrote about pork beans, an acquaintance asked me how I make it. So, while I know this isn’t necessary, I’m going to share my recipe for pork beans with you all:

■Ingredients: sausage, pork belly, mixed vegetables, a package of stewed soybeans in water, butter, ketchup
■How to: Cut the pork belly and sausage. Melt the butter on a pan. Fry the pork belly and sausage. Add the other ingredients. Season with ketchup, salt, and pepper.

That’s it! There is no magic. What I like about this is that you can freeze almost all the ingredients, and that makes the whole thing easy. (The traditional recipe uses bacon, potatoes, and onions) This also pairs surprisingly well with a highball, so I recommend that. An old game by NekoNeko Soft that was like my home to me said, “Prepare snacks and drinks when you play this game” in the manual. For KARAKARA, you need snacks and alcohol when you play the game, too!

For our next time, the third entry……hmm. I think I will highlight the characters more. Maybe we’ll talk about Lucia, since she was very popular on the forum.

Calme Column #1 "KARAKARA ON SALE THIS MONTH!"

Hello everyone, I am Kio Nachi. I'm a designer, a writer, an office employee, a person who holds a side job, and of course a guy who drinks. A handyman who most likely accepts a task within my skills and understanding. Because of that, I have done many things in my life, but that is a story for another time.

This time, we talk about "KARAKARA." This game was announced this year in February, and when this column publishes on the web, it is the day before release. However, the short period between announcement and release, and the very unusual making and selling styles of this game have not been talked about in depth.

Hence, I am utilizing Dengekihime.com as an outlet to say "KARAKARA." Please, stay awhile and listen.

This game would fit into the Genre of "Bishoujo" games. But unlike many of the genre, there is the biggest difference.

- It is short (Almost comparable to the size of one light novel)
- It is reasonable (a basic plan would be about a 1000 yen) < I didn't want to use the word "cheap here."
- No routes (A linear story)
- Download-based Sales (Although we do have physical products)
- For International Players (Is very different compared to player base meant for Japan)

Usually for Bishoujo games, a full price would retail around 10,000 yen, and its gameplay would net upwards of 30 hours. Due to this kind of standard, it is hard for newcomers to join the market. Although these types of property are characteristic of the genre and do bring its charm, I often thought of how to lower the cost and game time so that it is much more accessible. Hence, I am trying it out.

I do believe that this game offers that accessibility. The play time is not as long, and for those who like p19's illustration, as well as the setting and characters, it 'd be good if the audience would give this game a try.

This work takes place in America. The game has all the scenery that I love about America: the desert, the straight roads, and the bright, bold blue skies. Most of all, a crucial point is in the menu of the protagonist's roadside diner, Clam Chowder. For those of you who have gone to America should know, like Miso soup which can't go wrong, in America most Clam Chowder are all good. From the standard Clam to those with an assortment of ingredients, they differ based on region and are all good. You can dip dry and stale bread, or even throw large chunks of crackers into them.

So after you enjoyed the game, please reminisces about the far distant land, with a cup of clam chowder. To be honest, I was unable to add my second overall favorite American dish: Pork Beans. I will add that in next time. For that dish, rather than using whole tomatoes like a fine cuisine, I like it much better with salty ketchup and greasy pork belly... And of course, pair with a light tasting beer...

I digressed a bit, but in the next column, we will discuss the world and the plan for the future. So, until then, please wait in anticipation for the game.
