Hellcannon

(Death/Thrash Metal)

United States

Albums:
  • Infected with Violence (2010)
  • Terminal (2014)
  • Return to the Wasteland (2017)

Hellcannon is a four piece band that plays death/thrash metal with hints of black metal. They do have some mid tempo songs here and there but they mostly stick with fast paced, aggressive death/thrash, in fact I'd argue that half the time they just abandon thrash altogether and go full death, pretty good death might I add. That was the case for their first album at least, for their future releases they've seemingly decided to turn down the death a tad and focus on the thrash side, and while I can't say the result's nearly as good as their early work, it still makes for some reasonably decent metal. So, if you're a fan of death/thrash, I do recommend giving Hellcannon's debut a listen, and maybe the rest of their discography if their sound peaks your interest.

Book of Numbers

(Doom Metal)

United States

Albums:
  • Magick (2020)

Book of Numbers is an american group that plays some 80s-ish inspired heavy/doom metal. They were formerly a Black Sabbath tribute band, and yeah, it shows, there's a riff that sounds suspiciously like Into the Void here, an intro that kinda resembles Ozzy's Diary of a Madman there, and if that didn't make it clear enough, there's a Children of the Sea cover in the middle of their debut. They wear their inspiration on their sleeve without making the parallels too distracting, so personally I can't complain, it makes for some decent Black Sabbath/Dio-ish metal. If you enjoy the sound of the aforementioned bands, consider giving Book of Numbers a chance.

Week 6
Axetasy
(Speed Metal)

Germany

Albums:
  • Withering Tides (2025)
80's Speed with a dash of Black Metal influence? Why yes, yes it is. The vocals are mostly clean but at times drift towards *almost* black metal, with a mountain of gang shouts and screaming on the side for good measure. They play fast, sometimes with riffs that sometimes sound more akin to more power metal-ish speed a la Helloween, but Axetasy keeps their feet firmly planted in the heavier end of the genre and keep away from the power genre's cheesy factor. They make music to mosh to, and they do it well. Their debut launched last month, hopefully they gain more popularity and drop some more albums in the future.

Chamber Mage
(Heavy / Epic)

USA

Albums:
  • By Light of Emerald Gods (2025)

Now we're rolling to a band with Manilla Road vibes and more of a NWOBHM lean. These folks have their first album dropping in March, though their demo from 2022 is worth a listen in the meantime. The demo doesn't have the cleanest production by any means, but I'm looking forward to hearing the tracks in the nicer album quality. The guitar work is tight with riffs that bounce from groovy to zippy, and obviously you can't go wrong with trad fantasy subject matter and style. There's not much on youtube aside from the topic channels, so be sure to check 'em out at the bandcamp link below.
