This game wears it's inspiration on its sleeve. Emulating old school NES RPGs, Crop and Claw is a game about buying dragonfruits to diving into random caves full of bandits and dragging yourself out with just enough health to get yourself back to a town alive. At least that's what it feels like right now. If you're a fan of the original final fantasy games, Dragon Quest, I think you'll find a lot to like here. Though I will say the game makes you play at it's own pace, which I could imagine might feel slow at times.

Also, completely unrelated to the gameplay, but I think the setting for this game is really cool, maybe it's the hand drawn art frame used to house the little NES game, but it kinda feels like stepping into a children's book, which looking at Dinoleaf's other work, is probably deliberate. I hope the team gets the opportunity to work on something that's higher fidelity cause a more realized depiction of this world is something I'd really like to see.

An extremely compelling use of regular poker rules and TCG mechanics. Great for both short sessions where you just want to get a run in, or a regular game you can play though in a few sittings.

I know this is a weird way to put this, but if you like Hollow Knight combat, Idle games, and Boss rush games, you'll find something to love here. Whats really cool is that it also has a very strong VN style narrative woven through the gameplay that really helps enhance the experience in a way both really couldn't do alone. Before you have a change to get bored fighting you're getting more of the plot, before you have a chance to get bored of the story you're playing the game. It was very short so I do wonder if that would have gotten old over time, but I think if you just keep adding game elements like the water faucet and the toilet lids you'd probably be able to avoid that problem.

If I had any criticism for the game at all, I'd say maybe consider making it so the player can attack and pour the glass of water separately. Sometimes there's just so many enemies I have to protect myself but that also means I spill the water.

For being in early access I feel like I got a suprising amount for my money. 100% recommended.
make sure you play with friends though. it's a lot more fun that way.

It's real good, You can beat up headless bikers in vegas, and then after your done doing that your can dress up your robot girl dolly to be the prettiest of all the robot girl dollies.

Edit: You know what, over the last two years since I've played this game I've actually found myself recommending this game to people more than I expected. so I'm changing my rating to a recommend. That said, I still think people should know going in there's a little jank and the ending is still pretty bad (also that last boss fight specifically) I'm still not 100% sure it's worth the price but obviously I still have fond memories of it till now so maybe I'm wrong here.

I liked the game, although I don't think it's really worth more than a dollar. It was a fun world to explore, not very challenging, but fun.

I will say, the game really feels like the developer rushed the ending, while jank is present for the whole game, it really ramps up when you're fighting the last few bosses. With the final boss feeling like it was just put there beause the game needed it to be considered finished.

If I had anything to recommend to the developer, it would be to take this game, and make a metroidvannia style game with the engine, with a heavy emphasis on exploration and atmosphere, I think they way they develop is really geared towards that. Though I might just like the atmosphere because it reminds me of old free indie games I used to play.

Now, as for whether or not you should buy this game, While I'd like to recommend it, I just cant at this price. Like I said, It's worth about a dollar in my eyes. It's a fun experince, there's nothing about the game that is actively offensive except for some occasional glitches or jank that thankfully your character is exempt from, but the ending really really left a bad taste in my mouth.

This is one of the few games on steam I'd say you should go out of your way to buy when it's not on sale. A lot of puzzle platformers can be brute forced by just messing around for a while until a solution presents itself, but this one is different. You have to think it through, and it does a good job at introducing to the mechanics slowly so you can come to understand the world's logic quickly.

I will say, as a computer science engineer, I found myself breezing through the first few missions and felt a noticible spike in difficulty at world 4-ish. So if you're like me you may want to slow down and focus on understanding how the mecanics work. If you're not familair with recursion, or at least havent used it a lot, the learning curve seems perfect though so please don't let me deter you.
