a phenomenal remaster of one of my favorite games of all time. my go to rougelike and game to throw an hour or 2 into pretty often. Risk of Rain 2013 already stood the test of time for me outside of its multiplayer, and that one issue i had with the original is now completely overhauled and good, much like the improvements from the second iteration. cannot recommend more

Let me preface this by saying Ys VIII is my favorite game of all time.
As someone who has put hundreds and hundreds of hours and countless 100% nightmare playthroughs in the console version (specifically the switch version), this PC port just straight up is not good. Some skills are nerfed straight into the ground for no real reason, and when I say nerfed, I mean completely unusable. You can already see the effects of this only a few minutes into the game. The very first skill, which on console hits 3 times, only hits 1 single time in the PC version. Did it combine the damage of all 3 hits into 1 hit? No. It's significantly weaker than your STANDARD ATTACK, even at max level. Literally how did this ever get messed up? And these skills only become more abundant as the game goes on, especially when you first get the 5th party member, 3 of their 4 starting skills, and likely the first you spark to as well, are all completely unusable. This is NOT a problem at all in the console version.
Another incredibly large problem with this version is that the battles literally do not work. Sometimes while hitting something multiple times, the attack will just hit on every single frame the hitbox is active hor, completely melting bulky enemies and bosses. No clue what causes this, but I've gotten it to happen on almost every single boss fight so far, trivializing some challenges.
Another smaller problem, that I'm only bringing up because it literally is not a problem in ANY other Ys game on steam, is that there is no support for switch controllers. You are unable to adjust which buttons link to which skills, which would be fine if there was a Switch option like there is in IX. This lead to enough visual confusion and messing up some muscle memory that I ended up playing on an xbox controller.
There is no performance issues at all at the very least. Game runs very well at a consistent frame rate, and looks amazing.
This disappoints me immensely. As I said, Ys VIII is my favorite game of all time. I will scream from the roofs for every person I know to play this game. It's combat is incredible, the soundtrack is phenomenal, the characters are likeable and relatable, and the story, while not some amazing grand perfect tale, is great in it's own right. SO many things make this game so great for me, but I cannot recommend the PC port of this game, even if every other Ys game I can. Please, please, PLEASE, play and experience this game, just do it on ps4 (ps5 version is also being released soon!)

For a standalone game, this is a pretty good game. For an Ys game, it's not the greatest. It is incredibly interesting to recover Adol's memories, some of which give you more glances into his past character before he set out on adventures, which really help flesh out his character. Story wise, this hits a lot of the standard JRPG story notes, and if you have played any other Ys games, there are a lot of similar parts.
Gameplay is where this game starts to fall a bit shorter of the other modern Ys games. If you are coming from 8 or 9, the mapping is incredibly strict. In order to 100% the map, you WILL need to hug walls everywhere. For some reason, every SINGLE time you skill finish an enemy, a really annoying slowdown effect will occur, which really adds up over the course of the game. There are some parts of 100%ing that are a little more tedious than the other modern games as well

overall id say this is a great game, albeit with some obvious flaws at parts. If you are a fan of the modern Ys games, id say to give celceta a try. If you are new to the Ys series, this is not the worst place to start either. This is also a shorter game, my near 100% file is at around 23 hours, and i expect to 100% around 25. Just the main story is probably around a 15-20 hour playthrough.

one of my favorite games of all time, took everything great about ys viii and improved upon it, as well as improving on a lot of its flaw. had a blast the entire playthrough. There are def some moments where i go "yeah its still an Ys game" and brush it off, but not nearly as much as ys viii (seriously looking back, bosses were just not fun in 8 on high difficulties)
if you enjoy adventure, exploring, simple to understand yet still complex incredibly fun and rewarding combat, and amazing music (and more), this game is for you. Incredible gameplay experience that I will def be playing more of.

edit: help i completely 100%ed the game and now dont know what to do

i hate this game, its too much fun and screws up my sleep schedule so much because i keep going on "one more run"
