I played this game on PS4 when it came out, I got Vanilla version of DS on steam as a gift from friend so my play time is low.
All I can say is:
Yes, game is not for everyone, it is a whole different experience from what your standard game can offer. But if you can manage to keep that in mind and go with the flow of the game, this will be one of the best and unforgettable experiences you will get from game in a long time. Story is a mess when you just start, but step by step it makes more sense, it has deep lore of world that is built in game and you will come back to uncover more, characters are amazing, sound design and music choices fits game world just perfectly. Mechanics, yes, sometime they can feel clunky, but they are fun and whole inventory management and route planing mechanic is like additional game inside the game. Whole game for me is like some "Zen" state where I can just relax, appreciate beautiful surroundings and immerse my self in deep world that is built in game. Also the "online" functionality is really fun and nice implementation, tho I played offline most of the time on PS4 because of lack of internet, still it made sense and I can say, game story and idea will make sense no matter if you will play with online function or without it. It feels like everything was thought out to the smallest details.
For me Death Stranding is one of the best games that I ever played, unforgettable experience that I haven't got from any other game for a long time.
So yes, not for everyone, but If you are reading this and you do care what some random dude is writing on steam, give it a shot.
