feels a little like Idle Spiral but being actually a good idle game instead of a mediocore one.
Looking forward to dumping hours into this.
Props for giving it out for free ^^

Alright fellas.

just finished the game and want to give my two cents on it, spoilerfree.

First off, if you haven't played A Plague Tale Innocence yet, which is the prequel to this game, then I'd very confidently say that you should check that one out first if you are a sucker for narrative driven games. Also if you want to get your heartstrings ripped out and pulled through hell that is.

I wanna take away that I'll compare Requiem to Innocence a lot since this is what most people will probably have played before jumping into Requiem and ... I just cant keep myself from that since the first game was kind of a surprise game of the year for me and how things improved in this title flashed me big time. Still, reading through the following big brain evaporation of mine should be rewarding for people who haven't gotten the chance to play the first one yet as well.

If you liked Innocence a lot then you will like this one as well, I'm VERY confident in that statement. You could easily skip the following pros and cons if that's the case and just press the green buy button somewhere up there, trust me.

So lets start with the good

The many set pieces and visuals are freaking amazing and could already stand on their own as a reason to just go experience this game. I mean it, Asobo Studio already showed what they are capable of in their first Plague Tale entry and they solidified it here again with just breathtaking pictures, scenes and diversity. They will let you experience places from breathtaking heaven to miserable gruesome medieval hell simultaneously.

The combat/stealth got improved in a lot of ways and felt really fun throughout the whole game, which is something that soured the gameplay of quite a few Innocence homies in the last game. Here it stands on its own two pretty gameplay feet if I may say so myself. The hostile encounters aren’t “fake” arenas anymore but real and big arenas with lots of different approaches and angles to how the player wants to navigate through the mess they will find themselves in often enough. You feel empowered to do things your way, though on hard difficulty which i choose, combat often times will have to be your course of action should something go wrong. Mixing things up is very possible however and usually got rewarded in my experience

The narrative takes you into a lengthy and interesting adventure and wont shy of switching the location every other hour which keeps everything fresh and is a big W since the setpieces (as already pointed out before) are simply phenomenal. How music, dialog, level design and visuals get combined and mixed to a wonderful atmosphere smoothie here is remarkable and could very well be a reason for why to get this game (just as it was in Innocence).

Some here have described Requiem as a walking sim at parts. It is. But for me that was a good thing because I got to soak in the atmosphere of these locations so much better. Aside from that, the breathing time they provide makes the stressful moments of the story more rewarding in every aspect in my humble opinion. Especially since said locations might change throughout the story and shoot at you with a hand of **the world is acutally changing around you and you don't exist in vacuum** energy. Everything around you can and will evolve or change, doesn't matter if you want it or not.

The not so good

Sadly quite a few points I want to include here are heavy spoilers which is why this will be rather general but still.

The drama in this game itched me but didn't break my heart like others do (except the last hour of the game but hey its just a game they say). Which isn't to say that that must be a bad thing in itself. What itches me more is that the english voice over / writing at times just isn't quite what you’d like it to be for me. There are quite a few instances where its obvious that the player should feel into the unfolding tragedy and you will often enough. The sad part for me was in a good junk of them not the thing that actually happened but the delivery of said moment that could’ve been executed … better? I blame the english voice over on this one even though the voice cast absolutely deserves its praise for general superb handling of their characters. You believe how and why they say what they say through most of the game. As said though, especially the big teary eye moments just wouldn't get to me at times. Maybe it's really more on the writing than the VO. Or just me being overly critical. Could be that I wouldn't say this if I hadn’t played Innocence which was an emotional rollercoaster for me and tapped into my emotions very quickly and deeply. Dramas are what I enjoy most in games and movies so maybe Im difficult to impress at this point, who knows.

Hear me out, please read the extra sausage I added as comment if you don't agree at all with what I'm about to say next. Admittedly - rarely - but still, the narrative makes you wanna scratch your head in a 360° rotation. Asobo Studio said in an interview that they knew how they wanted to end the story even before Innocence got released and maybe this caused some forced direction-pushing from a story perspective. Fellow gamers who pay superduper attention to plot details will probably be able to tell sometimes that the game be doin some setuppin there instead of actual - at the moment - relevant stuff. Some plot points feel like they are there to serve a planned ending to them more than a progression of said plot. The weird thing is that that's more of a 50/50 between great and bad here. Some plot revelations feel very rewarding and satisfying in the moment, others fulfill that purpose only marginally. Still I don't want to actually can't understate the writing department that got a mass of fresh and great ideas to give a reason and explanation to happenings in the story and changes to the world. Those ideas just don't seem to work out the way they probably wanted it to every time for the player. However, I’m fully aware of me being very nitpicky when you compare this statement to like 90% of the other games on the market that couldn’t give a damn about giving reasonable explanations to why the ♥♥♥♥ we are in the situation we are in right now.
[insert comment sausage here, ran out of words]

mixed feelings

Just one thing. The OST. The Soundtrack slaps hard (Olivier Deriviere did it again), even though I have to admit that the first one from Innocence catched me slightly more in that regard, which could be an admission of different taste from my side or the composer redefining a lot of the already god blessed music pieces from the first game to slightly worse. I say this because for me the OST of the former title absolutely killed me throughout the story just to revive me again before the next big smack in my sad, emotional face. As said though, probably just my taste and there are definitively banger pieces in here as well that win a 1 one 1 against most other OST’s in games I have heard so far by more than just a million miles. On the other hand some of the music in this game works so well because you know the original version of them from the first game and connect a lot to it already.

tl;dr for the sneaky ones

Look, you want a game that you will occupy a weekend with mostly great writing and music?
get this one and dont even think about regretting it before you played it through.
You like torturing yourself while killing evil soldiers with stones and occasionally some alchemy magic?
Even a greater reason to get this.
You kind of want some Uncharted but in a world that accidentally changed the word cool to cruel cause they sound almost the same?
There you go.

Cheers

There are valid criticisms about this game but with that said:
The dev seems to really put in the work and comminucates very clearly and frequent to and with the community about suggestions regarding future features or the fixing of bugs.
Even if the game was a complete 0 outa 10 which it isnt at all - I have quite a lot of fun with the game and it clearly explores mechanics that I havent seen anywhere else and I have seen a lot of idle games in the past few years mates - this is worth a thumbs up just for how the dev listens and cares.
If you dont believe me you just have to check out the discussion tab of this game and see for yourself

great game - great to see new stuff if you come from dbd, queue time are ass right now though, probably cuz of issues with the infrastructure or something since players are in abbundance. If they get that fixed its gonna be one of my favourites.

just meh
performance is meh
warlord system is meh (hm I wonder where the idea got kinda recycled from *cough* SH2 *cough*).
What happens when you've been sitting on this one skirmish mission for 1 hour already and got the last enemy lord to about 5% hp, seconds away from victory?
answer is a crash lol
Only positive could be that unit meta doesnt revolve purely around ranged units / archers anymore. At the same time that was for me personally the fun part about defending your castle. Doesnt really matter though because the "AI" aint got much "I" in it. Yeah I get that the older Stronghold games hadnt the smartest AI either but come on. about 50 high level melee units just standing idle infront of my walls for 10 minutes until I finally got a firebomber up there to burn them for another 5 minutes isnt something to put in your CV.
I tried to give this game a chance and played through some campaigns + completed the first skirmish trail
but tbh just go play SH 1 or SH Crusader 1
I get the effort for trying out a new setting and partially new concept but if you want to change things up then go for it and dont stop half way through
dont even wanna mention bugs here, only thing I found quite amusing is that the "x produced / per minute" pannel is awesome until you realize that they didnt even test out if they worked. Clothes are always at 0 produced per minute even if your stockpile is growing to 1500+ of them - and for me that was the go to popularity production line so yeah. thanks for the effort but atleast make sure it works or PATCH IT OUT already. Isnt like this game has been out for over 2 Years now.

would pass this one if I were you

First of, pretty good for doing sth while watching YT.
Dev has a great humor and most of the time, you can read into the math of specific gameplay elements which I highly appreciate. I'd argue that you can't just play without having somekind of gameplan or thinking about whats the best next move, on the other hand though I usually hate those kinds of games because I just wanna idle and not think about anything while doing it. And I dont hate this one for sure. So its a mixture of having to think a bit, and lots of idle. Both "gameplaystyles" work from my experience.
So to conclude, if you wanna play an Idle game where you can actually put thought into it and try to find the most efficient way of progressing (without the wiki which I never needed personally) then this is the game for you.
If you wanna play an Idle game just for the sake of uga uga number go up uga uga then this is also a great game for you.
I mean its free so just give it a try.
