I have to admit, I started up Ori and The Blind Forest with low expectations. I've played a number of games on Steam that had outstanding graphics, be it something that looked painted or something with top-notch pixel art, and walked away from a sizeable number of them. Usually it was the same problem on loop: The game looks great, but the gameplay is boring or just too lackluster to remain compelling for very long, even after trying to get everything I could out of these titles. Still, I'd heard tons of praise for Ori over the years, so I figured I'd give it a shot anyway.

Ori blew me away completely, and left me smiling constantly! The platforming felt great, the visuals didn't disguise anything cheap, and I was able to have a blast the whole way through! The abilities are all solid and useful, comboing into each other seamlessly, and they were unique, too, such as the one that lets you freeze what's happening while you grab a projectile or enemy and aim yourself to rocket towards a new direction of your choosing! You'll even have to use this to aim a projectile somewhere else, whether to solve a puzzle or beat up a foe with their own projectile!

Abilities with multiple purposes like these remind me of why I fell in love with Metroid and the Metroidvania genre in the first place. The abilities you find are great for exploration, sure, but they also improve combat, and that makes them more than just a glorified key. Growth and evolution is so important for these games and Ori lives by that. Basically everything you can do is great for both progression and combat, it's wonderful!

The game's no pushover, too. You'll be given plenty of room to learn and practice with your abilities, don't worry, but don't expect the game to just hand you your victories on a silver platter. You will be tested many times on what you've learned, and the game's pacing for those tests is excellent. This is one of the most refined, enjoyable, and just darn satisfying games I've played on Steam. I wholeheartedly recommend this game and can't wait to play the sequel later. I have nothing but love for Ori and The Blind Forest in my heart!

"Boy, this remake takes forever to load on Switch and the game looks less charming than it used to, too, even with the graphical limitations of the time. The remake has a weirdly dull, orange filter on a few levels and even the intro, as well. It doesn't really capture the look and feel of the original at all. At least it'll load faster and look better on Steam."

Well, I was right about the loading at least.

Raphael is my son and I love him.

I have to say, I've played a number of Beat 'em ups and this one does not disappoint. The game oozes charm and even manages to make a sewer level a good time. Taunting feels rewarding and good and once you learn how much it can benefit you, you can turn the tide in battle quite quickly! As for music, Tee Lopes, man, I wasn't expecting him to surpass his work on Sonic Mania, but this goes even harder. I mean, we've got a vocal track in this game by the Wu-Tang Clan, how can I begin to complain? This whole game was an absolute delight! Thanks again to my friend that gifted me this!

The only real complaint I have with Sonic Frontiers is that there is no option to refight the Titans, which are the sickest and best Super Sonic bosses of the whole franchise.

Sonic Frontiers, after so many years, finally brings back the heart and soul of the pre-Sonic Colors games, and man, it's such a breath of fresh air. I can say without question that this is one of the best Sonic games I've played to date, if not one of the best SEGA games I've played period. The fact this game can go from the most hype vocal tracks in the series and feature lo-fi beats to fish to and have all of it work is proof of this soundtrack's quality, too.

A lot of people compare this game's open-world structure to Breath of the Wild, but as someone who's played BotW, I think that game walked so Frontiers could run. Sonic's speed allows him to traverse these massive landscapes with a quick jog and that's so refreshing and allows for seamless gameplay instead of needing to open a map and fast travel everywhere all the time, though that option does exist if you wish to use it, too! I can say wholeheartedly if you've been unhappy with the direction of the games from the Colors to Forces era, you'll be quite happy with Frontiers. Sonic and his friends are back to being themselves and are better than ever, everyone.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go listen to the Titan boss themes, most notably, Find your Flame, another 500 times.

WILL THE WHOLE WORLD KNOW YOUR NAME

I think people should spend less time debating whether Sonic Adventure 1 or 2 is better and put more time in the Chao Garden. I've seen this game's achievement statistics, and roughly 80% of you haven't even named the Chao you're raising. Shame on you. Get back in that garden and give those adorable little guys the love they deserve.

I'm forever grateful to the close friend of mine who bought me this game; they're a great person and I respect them immensely. Shantae and the Seven Sirens, however, does not get the same kind of compliment from me. I knew I'd miss Jake Kaufman's music in this game, and that feeling only grew after hearing the intro theme, which sounds like something right out of a bad anime fandub. The retro tunes also don't feel very catchy or fun and are merely serviceable at best. My big problem with the game, however, is that it's not friendly to people with OCD, which I have.

The map has no markers for collectibles unless they're plot-related, so I can only imagine how painful a 100% run would be, but even beyond that, the "reveal invisible objects" magic completely drained me of my will to keep playing. The idea that something potentially important is invisible with no obvious tell that it even exists is already less than pleasant to me, but there's one element that boosts this problem to the point of rendering the game unplayable for someone like me, is that the update to this game gives you an icon at the top of the screen to show when a room has something invisible in it.

This is not the fix you'd think it is because THERE IS AN ICON FOR INVISIBLE CONTENT IN NEARLY EVERY ROOM IN THE GAME AND NOTHING SHOWS YOU ON THE MAP WHERE YOU'VE ALREADY FOUND SOMETHING. Making that realization exhausted me more than words can describe.

On top of that, reveal costs MP to use, and that means constantly hiking back to the bathhouse or guzzling potions to regain your MP. It's so much work, so much anxiety, and man, I can't will myself to stick with the game as a result. I'm glad the new update allows for this game to have more quality of life updates and new ways to play (especially since one new mode gives you all the cards you'd otherwise have to deal with an agonizing grind for), giving fans more to do and get out of this game. Me, though? I'm just going to stick with Pirate's Curse and Half-Genie Hero.

Team Ladybug once again knocks it out of the park with another fantastic Metroidvania! I know nothing of the series this is from, but loved it anyway! I'm glad we're still getting Ikaruga-style mechanics in their games. They were a ton of fun to work with and added more depth to the combat in Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue. I'm delighted to say the same can be said here! I'm especially fond of how the wind and fire elements are handled here as both are very useful and feed into each other in such a way that you aren't motivated to just stick to only one of them the whole game. I'm super impressed by how well that was handled! Farming weapons for achievement completion seems a bit tedious, though. Thankfully, that's not required for the game itself!

I absolutely recommend this game, as well as everything else by Team Ladybug so far! This team's darn good at what they do!

This mod made me feel like a genius and an idiot at the same time. In other words, it's a good puzzle game! I don't often find mods this intricate and well designed, so you're darn right I recommend this!

The only way I can see someone getting anything out of this is on the basis that you, the person reading this, are an avid Mega Man fan who REALLY wants to play as their favorite character, particularly if that character hasn't been playable before or you just really, really want more content with that character. Keep in mind, the usual gatcha issues are still present here. This is purely something I'd recommend if you want some fanservice from games across the franchise. They've even got stuff from Mega Man Starforce here, and that series RARELY gets referenced. A shame, too, it's darn good, especially the third game.

Boy, they REALLY dump the tutorials on you in this, huh? Can't say I'm a fan of that due to how naturally intuitive Mega Man's platforming aspects are in each series. I mean, let's be real, how much of the player base for this do you believe hasn't played a Mega Man game by this point? You don't need to go this hand-holdy for the basics, especially to the point of highlighting buttons to press and making us press them to continue. It's a bit much. Lay off on that.

Going into the content longtime fans are more likely to be interested in, the alt costumes are pretty hit and miss, but stuff like Halloween Sigma and White Day Axl are handled remarkably well as they just added their outfits on top of the armor. Halloween Sigma gets special mention as it makes for one of the funniest ideas for a costume on a character I've seen in this series, as it's placed on top of Sigma's hulking frame. As far as I'm concerned, this should be the standard for the alt costumes for future characters, none of this "now they look human and not like themselves" stuff like with Swimsuit Ferham. Stick with the recognizable shape and/or armor, that stuff works.

The game unfortunately has all the trappings of many gatcha games, and boy howdy, power creep is one of the big ones. I've gotten pretty far in this game, but it leaves a lot to be desired due to how slowly you gain power after a certain point, yet the game's power expectations do not slow down at all as you progress, and even with the skip dive features to aid in grinding, the game's pace halts at a rate unlike any other. You thought metal grinding in X8 was a chore? That's like moving at lightspeed compared to the glacial pacing of power gain in X Dive later on.

I cannot recommend this one. Even among other gatchas I've played, there's just so much that leaves so little to be enjoyed here past the representation of characters from throughout the franchise. Too many problems just keep this one from being fun. I'm glad to say I've never spent a cent on a gatcha game, especially after playing this one.

Somehow, I forgot to review Freedom Planet after I beat it. Don't know how that happened as it's something I'd absolutely recommend! This game is one giant love letter to Sonic and Treasure games like Gunstar Heroes; it's packed with fun, speedy level design, while boasting some darn good bosses with so much punch to them! The sound design, the ways the bosses can transform and defy expectations, THE MUSIC, all of it comes together like perfectly meshed-together cogs in a well-oiled machine and all of this leads to one of the best platformers I've played in years. There's so much to love about Freedom Planet and I can't wait to play the sequel! I have nothing but hype for it! If there is one thing I hope the sequel does better, it's the way the story mode is handled. I'm not against having a story in action games, but there's a reason I stick with Classic Mode, which skips all the story beats, when I play this game. The cutscenes go on for a long while and they break up the pace a little too much and the writing... is... something...

Even then, that's a pretty minor complaint to have when, again, Classic Mode exists. That's how good Freedom Planet is. It's a totally solid and outstanding platformer with bosses so good you'll want to keep coming back for them alone. This is a must-have for anyone who likes action games and craves a good power high. It's exactly the sort of experience I've been wanting since Treasure themselves mysteriously vanished from the game dev scene. Again, I wholeheartedly recommend it. Truly phenomenal!
