An absolutely unique and innovative FPS experience. Do not be deterred by the seemingly lack of content.

Having never played Devil Daggers, I was going in with extremely low expectations. I was never drawn in by Devil Daggers' map-less gameplay or generic, Quake-clone art style, so the exceptional, beyond-compare art for Hyper Demon drew me in. The glassy, phantasmal look Sorath has achieved is unlike any other game within and outside this genre. And the fisheye lens helps ease the discomfort of a high FOV. I noticed after exploring Devil Daggers, that aside from a few additions, the gameplay and enemy types are largely shared. So, it seems this is Devil Daggers perfected--Sorath's definitive shooter.

I have never been a fan of the endless genre that Devil Daggers belongs to, so I was drawn in by the concept of striving for the highest score, rather than striving for the longest time. Because rather than playing yourself to death, you understand each run will end, allowing you to move on if you have limited playtime. This small distinction between Hyper Demon and its predecessor changes your approach, stress level, replayability, and enjoyability.

The uniqueness of the PvP is nothing you would expect, having a completely different gameplay from the main game. You fight 1v1 in a tiny circular arena where your goal is to precisely hit a dagger in the red dot of your enemy's cycloptic eye. You are given limited ammunition and shield that both regenerate after not being used. And the closer you get to your enemy, the more time slows down. The only similarity between the two gamemodes is the movement.

This game is an innovative yet simple masterpiece. I also love the novel concept of having "eyes in the back of your head" with a mirrored, red overlay, and in this limbo, it matters more than you would think.

A unique take on the PvP FPS genre. Reminiscent of arena shooters from yesteryear, The Finals combines a light selection of weaponry, class abilities, and fluid movement with its original, physics-based gamemodes. Teamplay is necessary to win as 3-player teams fight over scoring money into a timer that can be intercepted and stolen at any time. I will be referencing the "Quick Cash" gamemode, as I believe it is the ideal experience and what most will be playing.

The timed objective plays similarly to a traditional "capture-the-flag"-type gamemode, but encourages offensive play and allows for short matches. Unlike some competitive shooters, the symmetrical objective allows scoring by any party. A single clump of money is fought over, brought to one of two scoring points, and thrown (using telekinetic-powered physics) into the goal. The timer will begin for the team depositing the money. Before the money is scored, however, any team can intercept the timed objective and "defuse" it to steal it for their team. Any of the three teams must score twice to win.

The gunplay is extremely crisp and nearly every weapon feels overpowered in their own way. The heavy, medium, and light classes change the amount of health, movement speed, and equipment access, and act as a sort of "rock-paper-scissors"--this is not a hero shooter that becomes more unbalanceable as characters are added.

Physics and destruction are key features that make this game different from any other competitive shooter. Explosives--ones that spawn around the map or equipped in your loadout--can be used to level entire buildings. This dynamicism allows the objective to move around as players see fit. There is more destruction offered than that of the Battlefield titles and more than what was promised for Rainbow Six: Siege.

Best of all, this entire package comes free-to-play with monetization in the form of cosmetic items. This is innovative design that developers should strive for in competitive shooters instead of fad, industry-slop extraction shooters and battle royales. For fans of classic arena shooters, grad two friends as this is a game worth playing. The Finals is the next-generation, small-team competitive experience that will redefine the future of competitive gaming.

The art looks AI generated. The queue times take way too long. The game crashes and the anti-cheat calls me a cheater, preventing me from rejoining. The game is a blurry mess with the forced temporal anti-aliasing. The lighting is extremely inconsistent despite it being a gameplay feature.

Worst of all, it just looks like another generic, Unreal Engine asset flip. Another forgettable genre-fad game--an extraction shooter. As an enjoyer of Earthsiege and Tribes, this game does not live up to the hype or the moniker of Starsiege.

The best Duke-like you will ever play. Everything that made Duke Nukem 3D great is still here: highly interactive environments, quippy one-liners, plentiful secrets, and a large arsenal. The level design in this game is the best we have ever seen from a 2.5D game.

I have been critical of the laziness of traditional "three-keycard" objectives in the past, but Ion Fury's massive, non-repetitive maps made me forgive it. The beautiful cyberpunk cityscapes are very appealing, but it also offers various militaristic, industrial, and rural settings. Ion Fury's standout feature is the unique alternative fire modes of each weapon, such as aim lock for the revolver and dual-wield for the SMG--more innovative concepts than those of Dark Forces or Half-Life.

Despite being 2.5D, it's gunplay can have verticality, much like its predecessors Duke Nukem 3D and Doom. This makes the gunplay more engaging and challenging than the likes of Wolfenstein 3D. The difficulty is also no slouch on higher settings. There are overwhelming numbers of enemies with more health that will deal more damage. If you sprint out to rip and tear, you will find yourself as a puddle in no time.

Overall, all of these features cement Ion Fury as one of the best boomer shooters of all time, and a good starting point for those just getting into the genre. I am looking forward to its DLC expansion as well as its 3D sequel, Phantom Fury.

Though quite primitive in gameplay--being just a 3D Doom--the emphasis on complex, non-linear level design and projectile-based weaponry are a stark contrast to modern shooters. Unlike a more recent derivative like Half-Life 1, Quake's three-key gameplay doesn't hold up too well to time. You would play Quake exclusively for the robust, movement-based gunplay and to appreciate the grandfather of FPS. In addition, Nightdive's KEX lighting engine, online PvP, and free expansions are all the more reason to play this Enhanced edition of Quake.

Also, the soundtrack was done by Nine Inch Nails.

A three-dimensional blend of Metroid progression, Celeste parkour platforming, and Souls-like combat. Though not nearly as difficult as a Souls, the intricate maps and robust movement are the main difficulty focus of the game. The health system works much like Hollow Knight's. Expect easy combat but complex platforming.

My first playthrough took longer than average (seven hours), because I unlocked the wallrun ability near the end of my run. This was exacerbated by the lack of a map which is a common staple in Metroidvanias. Because of this, my attempt to 100% the items was cut short upon reaching the final boss Princess.

The lone ranged ability is extremely difficult to aim as it is tied to your character's direction and cannot be manually controlled. Because of the simplicity of combat, I wish there were a two or three more unique bosses to fight. Upon defeating the first boss, you realize it gets reused as grunts later which makes that fight seem less impactful.

I am a huge fan of the low framerate animations, low-res textures, and exclusion of anisotropic filtering. However, the lack of anisotropic filtering is not a choice and I wish that the graphics options were more advanced: Framerate is capped at 144, no texture filtering toggle (I'm more PS1 than N64), no internal resolution scaling, and no dynamic shadows.

I noticed the fonts and UI are early 20th century-styled, yet the game does not at all lean into a steampunk design. The style is traditional medieval fantasy with religious influences with each level having different design cues. Because the game is so short, the lore is confusingly fed through the NPCs (Undertale vibes), so I ignored making sense of it.

All that being said, my tiny criticisms can be thrown out when you realize that this is a solo indie jam game. AND THE GOAT DUDES ARE LIKE TOADS, AND SANSA IS LIKE THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM!!!

The perfect combination of story-driven level design, exceptional gunplay, and innovative set pieces. Its varied weaponry and setting keeps exploration and combat fresh throughout the playthrough. Unique boss fights, friendly non-playable characters, and Metroidvania-esque backtracking set the gameplay apart from other early first-person shooters.

When compared to its progenitors, Half-Life was the first to deliver a strong narrative and scripted events that boosted immersion. This is a masterpiece of game design worthy of anyone's attention. And if that wasn't enough, Half-Life would later become the basis for various mods such as my all-time favorite game: Counter-Strike.

25th Anniversary Update
Seven maps, weapon balancing, and Steam networking revitalized the Deathmatch playerbase. Console commands are no longer required to fix widescreen FOV and to disable texture filtering. The original Quake-style view tilt, main menu art, and Valve intro are restored.

The HUD is now scaled with high resolutions, and low input latency is a welcome addition, especially for Counter-Strike. Increased engine limitations (and Counter-Strike func_vehicle) will allow map and mod creators to make amazing stuff. The last things I wish for are an internal resolution scaler, texture-animated water for OpenGL, and dynamic lighting à la Nightdive.

Everything I've ever wanted from a Rogue-like FPS. A procedurally-generated, cyberpunk Quake-like. Lots of cues taken from 2016's Doom, like the movement, armor, and grenade systems. The first few runs are tough, but the progression will eventually turn you into a killing machine.

1.0 Release Update: The devs go above and beyond to fix bugs and QoL issues. My experience play-testing felt personal, because every issue I had reported during the pre-release betas were immediately fixed.

A perfect reboot that fully captures the original sci-fi horror experience of the classic game franchise.

New movement mechanics like double-jumping and mantling allow for smooth traversal of the now three-dimensional environments (which I hope to see in a future Quake reboot). The removal of a sprint ability--which was present in every past game--makes it more difficult to dodge enemy projectiles and forces tactically attacking larger monsters.

With modern graphics, Doom (2016) is able to tell its story and display environments in greater detail. Those who were a fan of Adrian Carmack's retrofuturistic art style may be disappointed that the new art direction is more contemporary, and thus slightly monotonous and generic as a consequence.

Creative liberty is taken for the better of the story, as it results in a much more cohesive flow. Because the story is now in the forefront, rather than a sort of afterthought in the 1993 original, there is a push to have an anti-villainous character who drives the narrative.

If I had to offer any criticism, it would be that the game has too many story cutscenes. If any cutscenes at all, they should be placed sparsely between levels similar to 1993's text screens.
