As someone who didn't play before the Badwater update, the game is amazing. I generally hate when games I love get major changes, but this is EA, and I have a feeling at least 50% of the complaints are just sour grapes, while there may be some legitimate criticism as well. I only say this because to someone who has no frame of reference, the game is absolutely fantastic, which renders the notion that it was "ruined" a little hard to believe. Perhaps people's personal haven was ruined, which I totally empathize with and have experienced myself, but for noobs who were not attached to previous versions, the game is an absolute modern classic. I just hope a future update doesn't turn me into one of the complainers and I have to change this review to a negative. The cycle of life continues, I suppose.

The throne straight up looks like it was thrown together in an afternoon. Way worse than the default. Barely any detail, and the colors don't match the bridge like the default throne. Not only that, but the DLC is so crudely done that you can't select which one to use without deactivating the DLC altogether, which also removes the ability to use the Cherub skin.

In addition to that crap, they essentially bait and switched pre-orderers. We were supposed to get a special bridge banner and now we get this, which anyone can get by throwing 5 bucks at the devs. I know it was "GW's fault," but it's not a replacement for the exclusive Alpha Banner like they framed it if it's a random DLC anyone can buy. It's disingenuous to pretend this is the replacement for the banner. It's not. It's just another DLC pack. The banner is just gone and that's that. Tell us the banner is gone and apologize. We're adults and ♥♥♥♥ happens. Treating us like idiots by lying that we got a replacement is just insulting.

It's good, but it needs more content and doesn't look like it's ever getting any. Buy it for half off.

This is a fps, but you will spend about 5x more time getting lost in pretentiously-complicated levels than actually shooting things.

One of the most fun shooters I've played in a while. The DnB soundtrack is entrancing, and liberal supply of slowmo makes it less exhausting than something like Ultrakill. Despite being a high-octane run n gun, it can be oddly relaxing. The graphical style is wonderful and the fully-destructible environments make for a different experience each time you play. The main campaign has plenty of levels and there are tons of bonus levels on top of that. It also has two additional modes. It's just so good.

They delete a years' old game and replace it with a new game and call it the same game and use the review scores for the old game. ValvE is really not the company it used to be.

I consider myself an intermediate Souls player. I beat DS1, BB and Sekiro. I basically beat DS3 and ER but not officially, and I've played a bit of DS2 the original DeS. I have between 500 and 1,000 hours in all the Souls games. I'm not bad at those games, but I am by no means an expert.

Let's just get this out of the way: this is NOT a looter shooter. Remnant 2 was recently brought up in the context of the release of Diablo 4, being a supposed alternative to that dumpster fire, and I've often seen the series in general described as being "looter shooters." That is a gross misrepresentation. You do acquire a number of weapons, mods and armor throughout the game, but this occurs at fairly fixed points. You are not getting new gear and replacing old gear as it drops from monsters or chests. All you get from combat is upgrade materials and currency. That's it. So don't go in expecting "loot." You will be disappointed. I beat the game using my starting shotgun. Each weapon is viable as long as you upgrade it. There's no trash loot. All of the gear has its own strengths, weaknesses, and identities, which is honestly better for a game like this than endlessly raining stat sticks.

With that out of the way, I am giving this game a thumbs up, but I have mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, it is an very fun indie souls-like shooter with some great combat and a solid presentation. Grinding for upgrades to my character and weapons/armor is more compelling than it should be. There are mods that you can apply to each weapon that add alternate fire modes that can change how you play fairly significantly. The special weapons have pre-installed mods that you can't change out, but they're fun enough that I don't really mind. Cycling back and forth between your two guns, their mods, and your melee weapon makes for exhilirating combat at times. There's solid level/enemy variety--better than a lot of AAA games. I really did appreciate that. It starts off pretty basic and boring at first, but it gets more interesting as it goes on. The graphics are really solid for what it is, as is the sound. The voice acting is surprisingly good for a lot of characters. There are duds here and there, but there are also a lot of really solid performances that help sell the world a bit more. The soundtrack, while usually barebones and generic, has a couple epic tracks. It's good enough. It often does its job during boss fights and the like. The lore, at least as it's presented early on through text logs, is actually really interesting and made me care about the world a lot more than I would have otherwise. It's not incredible or anything, but it's better than it needs to be. It's weird and unique and msyterious and really makes you want to see what the game has in store.

Unfortunately, Remnant really is a mixed bag. While all the aforementioned things are true, it also suffers from a lot of problems. First and foremost, the boss design in this game is some of the worst and most frustrating I've ever seen. Most of them have a trick or two to their mechanics that you need to figure out, but until you do, they just feel unfair and annoying. Almost all of them feature endless waves of trash mobs. They provide you with additional ammo, but there could have easily been a different system implemented that served that purpose without being so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying. You're fighting a boss and constantly having to deal with anklebiters swarming you. And sometimes they explode! The bosses would be 80% easier if not for the endless spawning adds that get in your way. Some of the bosses are interesting, both aesthetically and mechanically, but even the best are kind of mid in the grand scheme of gaming. I can't really fault it for that, as it is an indie game by a young developer, but I can't forgive the lazy design of throwing waves of trash at the player to mask simplistic boss design, nor the terrible final boss. The final boss is absolute garbage. It's essentially impossible to beat until you figure out a very specific gimmick, and it's set up in such a way that the player has zero incentive to actually figure it out. I imagine 90% of players bash their heads against a wall and give up. I just suggest you look for a guide on his second phase, honestly. It's not rewarding enough to figure out on your own, and there's a high likelihood that you never will. It's just badly designed. Maybe bash your head for an hour or two, but do not feel guilty about looking up the solution, because the game does nothing to help you. All of that being said, I would be lying if I said I didn't feel very satisifed after killing some of the bosses. Multiple times during my playthrough I was swearing and calling the devs talentless hacks and saying how much I hate this game, but after finally beating the boss, I would say, "I love this game." That back and forth kind of sums up a lot of the game. The general exploration/combat gameplay is a solid 7.5-8/10 experience with a lot of soul, but the bosses are mostly dooky.

The story is pretty lame overall. The lore is cool, great even, but the actual plot is as basic as it gets. What's frustrating is that it seems like they ran out of time or money halfway through (as seems to be the case with 90% of video games nowadays). For example, early on, the NPCs in the hub would comment on your exploits as you defeated certain bosses or accomplished objectives. I looked forward to checking in at regular intervals and getting a bit more story content. But at a certain point it just stops. They never say anything new. Even after you beat the final boss, it's as if nothing happened. Early on, their comments made it feel like a real place with people reacting to events, but once it stopped the whole thing just felt a lot hollower. It's also straight up missing a final level. The final boss is thrown at the player way too quickly after getting the macguffin (which was also an unceremonious affair after the journey to it), and his location should have been a level of its own. I don't think it needed to be as big as the other levels, but it needed some kind of large dungeon-like area leading up to the final boss. After beating him, the game just sort of ends. Nothing really happens. You technically destroy the thing you wanted to at the beginning, but you don't see the consequences of it. It just happens and fades to black. The credits don't even have any music, which was very odd. The whole thing just felt like it fizzled out.

I haven't played the DLC yet, so I can't comment on its quality or if it rectifies some of the main game's shortcomings. I imagine it's decent and adds some more content, but it's separate from the main campaign and you have to access it through a menu, which is kind of lame. I highly doubt it does anything to make the main campaign's story feel any better.

On a side note, the game also features procedural generation for its dungeons, which leads to seeing a lot of the same areas repeated over and over again. It's jarring to see the exact same hallway or arena with same debris/destructibles placed in same locations that you saw a few minutes ago. It really breaks immersion, which the game can provide to a pretty decent level, but the combat within these areas is fun enough to distract you from it, and the randomness does occasionally provide the freshness it's supposed to.

I know that's a lot of criticism, but I do genuinely recommend the game. I wouldn't care so much about the shortcomings if I didn't love the rest. It is fun and does feel special. The combat is great, there's a solid selection of weapons and playstyles. Upgrading is just inherently enjoyable. The enemy and environment variety is on point. The worldbuilding is good. There's a lot of replayability if you want to max out your stuff. If you like finding overlooked gems, check it out.

It's a very mid game. Probably not as bad as F4, but it's no Oblivion/Morrowind.

It's extremely janky, and the fact that it's still running on the same engine as Skryim is evident. It has a few graphical bells and whistles, but it still feels like you're playing an Xbox 360 game.

It also suffers from abysmal optimization on many rigs, which greatly damages your ability to get immersed. I would just wait for a sale after several patches.
