Disappointing. Its not game where you take weapon you choose and shoot demons with it. It is a game where you must use certain weapons/attachments on certain enemies (and their weak points) or else they wont die and you will lose ammo trying to kill them. Ammo which is so scarce that you have to chainsaw cannon fodder enemies every 10 seconds or so to just refill.
Game is too colorful and too cartoony, full of nonsense annoying platforming and other arcade elements (like +1 up lives). It doesnt look like a real place (base, castle), its more like levels taken from Mario game, with arcade elements (platforms that disappear when you jump on them, monkey bars to grab them, fire whips from walls etc).
It barrages player with tutorial messages for first few hours, as it gives player a lot of options and mechanics- dashes, double jump, grenades, super fist, different type of refilling health/armor/ammo (glory executions, flamethrower, chainsaw), enemy weak points. It is so easy to die if you dont manage different type of refilling your resources correctly. Add player character progression to that (runes, weapon mods, suit upgrades, base upgrades) and it can give you a headache in the beginning.
Where is the simplicity of Doom? I dont think i like they way they took with that franchise.
After some time maybe you will get used to these game mechanics (i still think gameplay is just weird), but i didnt, it was so frustrating i stopped playing. Its definitely not what old fan would expect.
Old Doom games (especially with mods like Brutal Doom) remain my favorite, and close second place is Doom 2016. This one is even worse than Doom 3. It is failed experiment. Give me my Doom back Bethesda!
