You wouldn't be completely off base calling this "Factorio Lite," but that's also not giving this game nearly enough credit.
While shapez.io is firmly planted in the same genre of automation and system design, it emphasizes different aspects of factory building and manages to stay totally relevant and fun, even if you're a Factorio pro. Some of the limitations and realism of Factorio have been foregone, but instead of making the game feel weak or under-featured, it just enables you to diver deeper into designs and strategies that are too unwieldy to face head on in Factorio.

Especially at this price point, shapez.io is an absolute must-have. It's just ridiculously good.

I bought this game at release. I was holding out for survival. The building mechanics are super cool, but I'm the kind of player that feeds off of the structure of a survival mode to guide my building, and that was promised 4 years ago but has yet to materialize.

If you're into 100% self-motivated creative building, go ahead and get this but I can't recommend it to those that are looking for a survival sandbox like I was.

I'll happily change my review if survival ever happens.

Edit: Yes I know the trailer is here. It's really ironic timing because i posted this right before the news dropped. I'm super excited to play survival, and hopefully it's amazing and I change this into a glowing review. I'm very optimistic, but stop telling me to change my review just because they put a date on survival. If this is still a thumbs down on May 8th, feel free to argue with me about it.

Edit 2: I tried survival and it's not there yet, in my opinion. I'm pretty surprised that after waiting four years for a survival mode, it drops without a single line of text explaining what I'm doing or why. I can see I have a health bar and food and water bars, but why is there nothing telling me how to craft? I wasn't looking for an "on rails" experience but a launchpad of some kind would certainly be nice. The manual is literally just the same one from creative mode with nothing added to give context to survival. Aside from the zero hand-holding, the intro experience is a bummer for other reasons. The scrap wheels and other beginner level parts you initially have access too aren't even worth using. I can run faster than anything I build out of those janky wheels. And then the grind to find components for simple parts is absolutely bonkers. I spent a couple of hours just looking for beeswax and I only ever found one hive.

I'm not giving up hope, I still have a hunch this game will be great when it irons out the wrinkles, but I still say don't buy it if you want to fire it up right this minute. If you want to invest, go for it but as far as I'm concerned, this game is far more untapped potential than it is actual tangible fun.

This game is stupid cool.

It shares a lot of the appeal of games like RimWorld or even Dwarf Fortress, but the unique perspective allows ONI to explore concepts that are too tricky in other games.

My favorite is managing liquids and gasses. DF has liquids, but you practically have to get a degree and spend months drafting plans and then apply for a municipal permit to start plumbing your fortress. RimWorld doesn't even bother with fluids because it would bog down the fun.

The sideview of ONI makes it super intuitive and fun to tackle these things. The gasses are especially neat. Switch to the ventilation view and you can see the breathable oxygen in your fortress floating on top of the heavier carbon dioxide. As you explore or start using pollutant machines, you'll get hydrogen floating on top or other potentially more dangerous gasses joining the mix. You manage these with a whole slew of different machines and ventilation systems to keep oxygen where your people live and the poisonous gasses where you can use them.

This is a review, not a tutorial, so I'll stop there but this and other similar quirky gameplay elements are what drew me in to this game, and it absolutely delivers.

Highly recommended. Get it if you enjoy stuff like RimWorld or Don't Starve, or if what I was describing above sounds intriguing at all.

You have never played a more creative and surprising game in your life. I'd love to say more, but it would be a disservice. Just play it!

I thought that I was above participating in a review bomb, but apparently they DO get the attention of developers/publishers, so here I am.

I'm one of the many that is royally pissed about the EGS exclusivity garbage that is going on.

Compete by providing a comparable platform, not by holding games hostage on your terrible store.

I'm ashamed of Gearbox/2K for playing ball with Epic.

I was really excited about this one, so I pounced on the humble bundle that had it at the $1 tier.

It was OK, but particularly at the price point I'd say pass on this one. Full price is $17, and I completed the entire thing in less than 2 hours. It's closer to a lackluster movie than a compelling video game.

It was honestly just uninspired. I thought that the premise of horror from a child's perspective was super intriguing, but the actual implementation was a combination of a fairly predictable story and repetitive gameplay.

I can occasionally get behind a walking simulator, but it's got to have a little more meat to it.

I recommend you skip this game and instead:
-Play Psychonauts. The aesthetic and most of the mechanics of Among the Sleep are a lesser version of it.
-Play Little Nightmares. It does a much better job of capturing the "I'm small and I'm scared" vibe.
-Watch The Babadook. It's a much better version of the same the story.

After I finished the story and played through the Museum bonus level that shows development tidbits, I was just super disappointed that they scrapped the fun "cliche" ideas that they started with and went for an even more derivative "deeper meaning" approach.

Short version: It's fantastic. Dwarf Fortress surpasses it in depth, but the interface and theme and all kinds of other things make RimWorld shine without any fear of getting lost in DF's shadow. It also draw from Prison Architect in a lot of ways, which is another thing to it's credit. Just an incredible game overall.

Paradox is like a strategy game mafia.
"It'd be a shame if somebody came in here and tried to charge you $300 for a single game. We can offer you protection from price gouging... for a small monthly fee, of course."

Original review:
If it's not broken, don't fix it. I hope Stellaris was a lesson learned.

Dec 2018
Edit:
I have conflicted feeling about Stellaris. Originally one of my favorite games, it later became a major disappointment, and now it surprisingly seems to be redeeming itself in my eyes.

To summarize my complaints, I don't appreciate paying for a product just to see it warped to the point where it's irrecognizable. I am all for upgrades and updates, and I expect patches and bugfixes. I don't want to see core features that I've grown attached to arbitrarily removed or reworked. Stellaris had some issues that needed resolving, but I don't believe that it was neccesary to overhaul it to the extent that they did.

As a surprising and lucky coincidence, I do like where the game has ended up. It plays NOTHING like it did when I first fell in love with it, but I really do enjoy this new Stellaris when taken as a new and different game. I still miss lots of things from before, but there are new elements of gameplay that are exciting and fun that didn't exist in the original Stellaris. I even recognize that there are a number of things that are just outright better than before.

When they started making their major controversial changes, I chalked it up to a disconnect with the playerbase. The game was selling well and it was getting great reviews, so it really didn't make a lot of sense to stir the pot. I actually still believe that they aren't super connected to the playerbase, but seeing where the changes have taken the game has led me to believe that they are more committed to realizing their vision of the game than they are to keeping it profitable. That's pretty cool honestly. It was risky a choice, and they took a hit for a while there, but they didn't back down when the players (myself included) started a riot.

At this point, I'm changing my review to recommend the game. As long as they don't go back to the drawing board again, the game is headed in a really good direction and it's tremendous fun as it is now. I consider this Stellaris 2 and it's a great game. It's just a little sad that Stellaris 1 is gone forever. I still don't support the practice of selling someone an apple and then later swapping it for an orange, but this is a fantastic game it demands my recommendation.
