I have over 200 hours worth of game play, more if certain episodes were not scrubbed from memory (more on that later). I've achieved Master Explorer and had a fair few scrapes along the way.

Now, eSail is not what I would call a finished product, but it is playable, enjoyable and educational, what more could you ask for from a simulation? This is not as such a racing simulator, eSail aims to replicate a 'realistic' sailing experience. A lot of work has been put into wave motion and sail handling. To a lesser extent there is a basic navigation layout allowing you to plot a course and follow it, it has adequate mooring and anchoring features. There are still a few bugs with anchoring but of no real consequence, just take your time.

The game works solidly on Linux whether through Wine or through Proton. The dev doesn't support linux, but to date there have been problems due to it being linux based. In my opinion this game is completely cross-compatible.

What it doesn't /yet/ simulate include tides, currents, ebbs, surface tell tales of underwater activities, wakes, wind push(?), breaking waves, sailing onto a mooring and fuel. However this is of particular benefit to prospective sailors. What eSail lacks in breadth, it makes up for in detail. A carefully voiced tutorial (english) and a calm explanation of each of the parts of the boats gets you up and sailing in a matter of moments. In fact it is so good you can walk onto a boat having played this and not only understand what each part does but improve on certain actions.

eSail provides various challenges, usually of the exploring variety but also treasure hunting, general navigation and even racing against computer opponents. Your results can be posted up on the various leaderboards so you can 'compete' against those from around the world.

What it won't give you is the practical experience that you can only obtain through sailing, the feel of the boat as it moves through the water, the instinct to know what the wind is doing without looking at the wind gauge.

eSail is for anyone who either wants to learn to sail, wants to keep their basic skills and theories up to date, simply enjoys sailing or even those who want so sail but can't for whatever reason. I highly recommend the game.

Things for the game to work on in the future include the ability for users to create mods to add in new boats, customise layouts and perhaps improve the land based scenery. This game however is currently being worked upon and improved.
