This is the best soulslike except for Bloodborne, and it's a close competition. Seriously amazing game. GOTY 2023 and honestly, probably the past 3 years or so. I'll do a rundown by category.

Combat is like Bloodborne in that it encourages aggression. All enemies in this slowly heal themselves to a certain extent, and enough DPS will grant you a stagger and a fatal blow. You can also restore your healing items when they're empty by getting enough hits in. It's all very smooth, fluid and gives you a massive variety of awesome unique weapons and builds to play around with. Weapon design in this is amazing - each have completely unique movesets and their own two super attacks, which, again, encourage aggression because you get the stuff to use these moves by attacking. There is also a very cool mechanic where you can combine different weapons to make new ones. Difficulty-wise, this is harder than Dark Souls or Bloodborne once you get past the first few areas. Bosses get incredibly difficult and often feel they're designed to be done with the optional spectre you can use to help you. It will kick your ass. Don't play this as your first souls.

The story uses the fromsoft lore style, but is a bit more direct with what's going on and this works out very well. And the side quests actually give you an idea of what you're supposed to do instead of extremely vague paths you have to google like in Dark Souls.

Soundtrack - phenomenal. Every boss has a unique theme song, and there are also records you can collect which are often quite beautiful. God, Quixotic is so gorgeous. Some special levels also have background music, which is a nice touch.

Level design is, again, extremely high quality. Follows a similar style to FS games and gives you just enough exploration room for it not to be linear and keep it constantly interesting but not that you get lost. Lots of shortcuts and little secrets to be discovered. Lots of enemy variety, which is great.

Graphics/performance - blew me away. The game is absolutely stunning and runs shockingly well with that in mind (with a 3070ti/5800x3d/32gb 3600mhz I get 120-150 fps maxed @1440p). Like seriously, if you zoom in on a texture there is zero distortion. None. I'm amazed this fits on 8gb vram. Needs a photo mode!

So yeah. This is incredible. Play it.
