NOTICE!

The mod no longer works, and it is no longer necessary, anyway. Keen has corrected the massive simulation speed problems previously associated with mining. I am leaving this here because I enjoy looking at it from time to time.

Feel free to browse the code for an interesting look at how Keen handles Voxel data. The mod was broken by Keen's constant moving and renaming of code, but the substance of the API and script have not changed. Just do not expect to find pretty code, as this was put together in a trial-and-error rush to figure out how to manipulate voxel data--line by agonizing line.

Created for the Cutthroat Survival server but freely available to anyone, this mod introduces custom drill mechanics, replacing the default functionality of the vanilla drills. They create considerably less lag, but they do come with a few caveats.

- In order for the drills to work, you must toggle them on and off using the hotbar or control panel.
- The drills do not function when you activate them with the CTRL key or the mouse buttons.
- The drills do not send puffs of dust everywhere.
- The drills do not play sounds when they hit the asteroid.
- The drills do not currently cause damage to other blocks or players.

NOTE: I have received feedback from one person running Space Engineers on a Windows emulator in Linux that this mod is not loading properly.

Aside from this, they function as you would expect a drill to function, and they handle multiple drills much more efficiently than the stock drills. I will try to address the list above in time, but if you are tired of 0.20 sim speeds and/or tiny drill limits, give these a try.

This is a relatively new mod that uses C#. There may be problems with it, and if you find any, please do not hesitate to report them to me. It currently will not work properly with custom drills, as other drill mods will still try to use the stock drilling system. This is something I am working on a solution for, but it may require modders to alter their drills for compatibility.

If you try the mod and like it, please take the time to rate it so others can find it more easily.

Hi Spades, as far as I can tell, Keen corrected their code such that using more than 2-3 drills at a time no longer reduces the entire server to 0.2 - 0.3 sim speed. So I am happy to say that this mod is obsolete.

The latest update/hotfix (Update 01.104) seems to have broken this, where as the previous version it seemed to work perfectly, now the drills wont drill at all.

Once I downloaded the mod and activated via control panel, I couldn't move anymore haha.

Had the same as the below. Drils would turn but wouldn't mine anything. Disabling the mod fixed it. Such a shame!

The latest update to the game seems to have caused this to stop working. The drills don't appear to be able to penetrate some asterouds now.

Just so everyone is aware, I have updated the license for the mod to allow non-commercial derivatives. I feel my period of exclusivity has passed, so enjoy. :-)

I've only ever gotten large freezes when approaching/leaving the area around asteroids when in ships composed of a particularly large number of blocks and/or ships composed of blocks owned by multiple users.
