Power Drive 2000
Don't suppose one "James Greb" has anything to do with Retrowave? Realizing no one developer has a monopoly on the 80s sci-fi/retro racing vibe, of course... one can't help but be reminded of the abandoned project when looking at this one.

That's a bizarre accusation to just toss out without the tiniest shred of proof.

There are at least six or seven other racing games here on Steam that do the whole Countach, palm trees and setting sun thing.

Those are universal symbols of 80s nostalgia, 80s retrofuturism and synthwave. Greb didn't invent Deloreans, vector glow or neon grids, and it's not cool to suggest that there's some connection here based on that.
Esteri 12 SEP 2021 a las 12:55 p. m.
Yikes. It wasn't an accusation - just a question coming from someone who wonders what the heck happened to Power Drive and at a glance saw similarities between this and that game/demo. As I said - no one dev has a monopoly on that aesthetic - but I couldn't help be reminded.

It's clear the question is being taken as an accusation/something meant to bite, so apologies for that I guess. It's not terribly uncommon for dev to jump from project to project over their careers, though in retrospect someone who abandons their own project would hopefully have a slightly difficult time attaching themselves to something so similar, even just from a PR standpoint.

Y'all enjoy the game now, genuinely didn't mean to insult any fans or devs.

Yeah, I don't know how he found an "accusation" in that either. I wondered the same thing. This project is the closest I've seen to that & I (unfortunately) backed PD2K.

Hey, notice how he asked a question and never accused? Get bent
Esteri 15 OCT 2021 a las 11:03 p. m.
The poster who read my inquiry as an accusation replied to my response in a positive manner including mentioning other similar cancelled projects (e.g. Drift Stage; this was comment #4), but I can see that's since been deleted. Strange given it was quite civil and nice to read.

Either way, insulting strangers on the internet is a bit silly... I only left this up in case other people saw Retrowave and were also reminded of Power Drive. The answer seems to be a "no" (or at least I certainly don't see evidence that the Power Drive developer is involved in this particular project) so I believe we can consider the matter closed - just happens to be a game that feels similar.
Firebrand 16 OCT 2021 a las 12:00 a. m.
Definitely seems to be a no answer, although we'll never know for sure if he was involved behind the scenes (unlikely, but technically possible). Nonetheless the similarity is striking & the question worth asking as I see it.

I had high hopes for PD2K (which I should've known better, being an ex game developer myself. Promises are easy. Delivery less so) & the way that project was abruptly abandoned after stating he was "going to talk to his lawyer. BRB." ( https://twitter.com/megacomgames/status/834223509396144128?s=21 ) About what, we'll never know; legal ramifications of running away with money, licensing cars of the 80s, who knows?

It left a horribly bad taste in backers mouths with no closure. So, at least we have similar projects like this that at least got (& continue to get) a release of a playable full game & not just the demo level of PD2K.

See, this is exactly my problem with this nonsense. It's like saying, "OMG, this game has Japanese robots! Is it possible this is the same guy who made a kickstarter for a Japanese robot game 5 years ago and ran with the money?"

No, the similarity is not "striking." These are visual cliches, graphical shorthand for "You are experiencing nostalgia for a 1980s that didn't really exist."

The imagery in this game is the same as dozens of retrowave/synthwave/80s nostalgia games, and you can find the same imagery on hundreds of Youtube videos for retrowave music. This is just the result of one half-hearted search on Steam, not including other keywords:

OMG neon palm trees! Stylized suns in the distance! 80s grids! Vector graphics glow! Deloreans! Lamborghini Countaches! Roads that go to space!

"Do you think...nah, could it be? Could James Grebb be behind all TWO DOZEN of these games?!? It's a conspiracy! He raised the money on Kickstarter, then founded countless indie studios and flooded the market with 80s nostalgia racing games!!!"

I'm fully aware of the motif & aesthetic. And you're putting words in my mouth I didn't say. I merely said it was *possible* NOT *likely*, & only in this specific case.

However, your point falls flat on the basis that 7/10 of those have been released in 2020/21. Only *3* have been released prior, 2 in 2018, & only *1* in 2016. Power Drive 2000 was originally kick-started in *2015*.

So, IE - Your claim is counter-factual, with an easily established history, & you're being ridiculous & histrionic.

You're suggesting, without a shred of evidence, that the developer of this game may be the same guy who scammed Kickstarter patrons.

If anyone's being histrionic, it's you. And clearly you don't understand how ubiquitous the imagery is or you wouldn't have made such a ridiculous post.

End of.

I said, & I (& you) quote “UNLIKELY, but technically possible”. *Possible*. NOT *did*. I even went further & said "unlikely". How that converts to a claim of guilt in your head is something for philosophers or psychologists to answer. Quit moving the goalposts, committing tu quoque fallacies & finding statements not found in cold obdurate fact in some misguided attempt to strawman me. Grow up.

This doesen't make "possibility" any more realistic. Some games released after 5-10 years after they've been kickstarted. Omori for example.

btw sorry for updating 3+ years old topic, I've just looked up my old kickstarter pledges and look up on projects that never came out. And found this discussion

So, one anecdotal unrelated example & speculation. Got it. 👍
