Get used to using the "favourite" button because game lags like mad in inventories and benches. Use favourite function on basic crafting materials and your choice of building materials and click the "favourites" button on top. It ends the UI fps drops.
I believe you can deal with the rest
In A16 If your tools gets under 50% of durability their overall block and entity damage was decreased. And repairing the said item would decrease it's quality to some degree. That decrease could be lowered with some passive skills that you could buy with skill points. So; unexperienced player repairing an 100 quality item gets 90 quality item in return. Experienced survivor could get 98 quality with passive repairing skills. So you had to calculate when to or not to repair the tools.
BUT, IN A17, tools' entity and block damage DOES NOT effected by durability of that item at all. And REPAIRING DOES NOT decrease the quality. SO, you can get quality 6 pistol and endlessly shoot with it. As long as you have repairing kit in your inventory, there will be no degradation. MEANING: You won't need to find another pistol for the ENTIRE GAME because you already have that top quality one.
My only two other complaints not outlined above is the devs desire to transform every single house into some degree of dungeon crawling, and the odd fact that all buildings have only sleepers in them. It makes sense for at least some buildings to have awake and wandering zombies
