This game is a huge bomb to just drop on someone that never ran into it in the last couple decades. It's a relic of the past that aged like fine wine and a piece of internet history from the early 2000's.

The base game Dr. Lunatic came out in 2000 and was developed by Hamumu - a one man team - and for the next couple of years, some expansions came with it that added extra content, including a level editor. In 2003, the game re-released as Dr. Lunatic: Supreme With Cheese, adding everything from those expansions, plus a couple hundreds of levels made by various people. That version of the game used to have a price, but has been free for years now and is easy to find online. Supreme With Steam is simply that version, but with full steam integration such as the workshop, achievements, leaderboards and all that.

The game itself is very simple at the very foundation and the tutorial does a great job explaining the basics, but is very dense in content and will take a while to experience most of it. As of making this review, I'm over 30 hours in and still haven't faced all enemies, according to my achievements.

The game itself is composed of worlds which you can select from the title screen. Each world has a navigable hub where you can pick which level to play. Some levels are blocked, requiring you to finish others first or to collect certain items. You complete a hub usually after a boss level and are rewarded with a key, which is the special in-game currency.

Initially, you only have access to the original Dr. Lunatic maps, which take about 10 hours to complete. There are over 80 worlds in total which you have to pay for using the in-game currency (coins you earn from completing levels or playing minigames) at the game's highly interactive mall. You can also spend your keys there on lockers for random prizes ranging from nothing to exclusive worlds and playable characters.

The objective and play of each level differs greatly. It can either be a level where you collect hammers to kill monsters, stealth levels where you have to stay out of sight, puzzles, driving courses, dark caves that require torches to navigate, underwater areas where you hunt for oxygen, you name it. The level editor is powerful enough to create quite unique experiences to the point where you don't know what to expect.

The varied gameplay, the spending mechanics that give a sense of progression and reward, the HUGE amount of content and the achievements make for a pretty experience that I think is worth checking out. It's a great game to kill some time with when you have very little time to play, as the average level will take you anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. It will probably take you hundreds of hours to 100% this game for the toughest achievement.

And if you think 1200 levels are too little for you, check out the workshop for a couple thousands more!

Unique and atmospheric game. The puzzles and combat are not the greatest but they fall beautifully in place to create a short and satisfying experience, while not being overly complicated or in excess.

I did not play the originals as a kid like most have done, so I think this gets to be less of a biased review.

For the record, I think the remaster is a fine experience, and is also the only one I've tried. It's a bit hard to say that this game has aged perfectly as I don't imagine many new people getting very far, especially when the first couple of levels leave you with the same environment and repeated actions shoved for padding and absence of content.

I think the real fun starts in the second half, where the layout and actions change pretty much entirely for every single level. It's really where the game truly begins to shine, as an element of challenge starts being felt for every level as you progress, due to maps being patrolled constantly and making it hard to hide in plain sight.

What I think is worth mentioning and also what kept me playing is the competency of the visuals. The style is very visually pleasing and well executed. The graphics are pre rendered and there are many, MANY animations to see. Even the most used animations are fun to watch.

The music is also REALLY nice. I especially like the song that plays during the chinese maps.

My only complaint about this remaster is that, upon watching some gameplay on youtube, I realized that the console ports of the game are far superior in terms of game content, like having multiple levels with different obstacles (like the mom during the house levels), which I think would have been a nice addition to what is essentially supposed to be the best way to experience the series.

But regardless, I think it's worth a shot for anyone unfamiliar with the games. I surely had my fun and looking forward for more games like this in the future.

This game is such an obscure piece of media there is almost no documentation of it online. I used to play it as a kid back in the early 2000's and it just stuck with me forever due to the extremely unsettling atmosphere. Only recently I looked it up and was surprised to see it published on steam, and on sale too!

I think it's a shame it went unnoticed all this time as it still holds up and the puzzles are actually really fun to figure out.
As of writing this review, I have absolutely no idea how many levels it has. I've just reached level 60 and I'm utterly surprised the game still pumps new mechanics and elements to it. The description vaguely mentions there being "about 100 levels" but I'll keep going and see where it stops.

Needless to say, it does come with plenty of playtime as I can see I've already poured in about 6 hours and I'm supposedly only slightly over half of it.

The game runs well on modern systems. My only complain is that there are occasional crashes, which is horrible as the game has no saving system, instead relying on an outdated password one. The game being obscure does not help this either as the passwords are not anywhere to be found online. Thankfully, I've photographed every single one of them as I played so I'll consider making a guide containing all of them when I'm done. YOU'RE WELCOME!!

As for complementary media types, the art direction is pretty good for it's age. You can actually see the effort as they even made death animations for all 4 directions for the main character. The soundtrack is also a banger and I think it's worth a listen.

I personally think this game deserves more recognition. It oozes effort, competence and passion to a level that many games nowadays aspire to have. Pick it up and see for yourself!

Cute little game with funny mechanics. Not too challenging or too easy but a great time after a hard day at work.

This game holds up surprisingly well for a game I've never had the pleasure of knowing.
I didn't get to finish it as of making this review but I can say with certainty it's lots of fun so far for how little it costs.

You play as black Pyramid Head

Nice little game reminiscent to oldschool cinematic platformers
It's as harsh and unforgiving as all of them

The overall atmosphere of this game is unbelievably good, to the point where I got fooled into thinking this is just a recent upload of one of those obscure old japanese first person exploration games.

Sometimes the solutions for some of the endings are pretty dull and hard to find without any kind of external help which is my only complaint, but a really nice experience in every other aspect.

Nice little turn-based RPG with a very unique art direction.
The story is intentionally ambiguous but doesn't make progression meaningless and the game is nice enough to not give you a game over screen upon death, but instead helps you to a warping zone without halting your kill or item progress.
