It's a theme park MMO, like World of Warcraft. If you like WoW, you'll probably like FF14.

Some things WoW does better:
*Better loot spread. FF14 dungeons are infamously weighted in favor of War classes over Magic. I'm level 42 and I haven't received a single dungeon loot item that improved my stats as a summoner/scholar.
*Better early game. It sucks in both games, but the early levels of FF14 are downright painful in how many things you can't do because "you need to unlock it through main story quests." And the early spells are really boring, the good stuff doesn't start coming online until roughly level 50.
*Better racial design/differences. WoW races all look very different and cover a ton of different designs/body types. FF14 races are all anime humans with funny ears and skin tones, and their racial stats are so irrelevant you shouldn't even factor them into your selection.
*No invisible walls. If the world design shows you a place that looks reachable, it probably is. Water is also fully traversible, whereas FF14 is very inconsistent on whether you can swim, usually only on beaches or designated areas
*Pets are renamable and easily caught in the wild. Plus the pet combat system is fully integrated into the playable world, you can do them anywhere. FF14 pets are harder to obtain, not namable, and you need to visit a specific location to make them fight.
*If you go premium and let your subscription expire, you can still play WoW with toons under 20 forever. FF14 locks you out of your whole account if your subscription expires, or even if you're a free account who logged into the game during an older free trial.
*I think WoW has a lot more visual variety in the different zones and world environments.

Some things FF14 does better:
*Character customization. You can tweak any aspect of your toon to make them look exactly how you like. And the main story quest will give you a free fantasia at around level 50, which is normally $10 and lets you enter the customization screen again.
*You can swap character classes at will, and level them up independently on the same character. You can hit max level in every class on the same toon. This is huge, and the single best thing FF14 has over WoW.
*Your mount will fight in combat with you and can spec into healing, DPS, or tanking. It's a great system that makes world questing a lot quicker.
*Since it's a newer MMO, the artstyle is generally crisper and higher-poly than WoW's. There's also the Gpose system, a built-in poser that lets you craft really good screenshots anywhere in the playable world.

Personally, I think WoW is the better game because I dislike FF14's invisible wall infestation and how railroady/unending the main questline is. Plus I prefer WoW's druid over any class in either game. But I play this because all my friends do, and at the end of the day, the two games aren't different enough to worry about.
