A total classic back from when Valve actually made games and didn't play the real life equivalent of monopoly.

Gameplay is fun and satisfying, with the main campaign taking you through almost all imaginable scenarios and locations of a zombie apocalypse, making every chapter very unique in their own way and allowing for a lot of replayability.

Progressing through the levels is either done by killing the zombies staying on your way, flicking a switch to open a door or filling up generators with gasoline to power a door, bridge, or something else.
Some objectives are a bit harder than others to complete, but there are difficulty settings for every type of player, from console peasant with half of his brain in use, to realism veteran who brings MREs to indoor airsoft games, has 99 confirmed kills in the Navy Seals and is probably doing your mom right now.

Gunplay is similar to Counter-Strike, with a lot of weapons from it, but made a lot more arcade-ish with low recoil, large magazine sizes and very short reload times.
Gore is highly detailed, satisfying unless you are from Germany, because we don't deserve great things, so we get the low violence version without any of it.

Co-op is the main focus of the game and it really excells in it. It's super easy to set up a co-op game with your friends and enjoy the evening fighting hordes of zombies.
Despite that, it's still possible to play through the entire game as a Single Player, but it is a rather lonely experience compared to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around with a group of your friends.

Being a Source game, there are a LOT of mods for this game.
Some are just smaller additions, some transform your whole game, so it is up to the person what they pick.

All in all, it's a timeless classic that we will remember for many years to come, which you should totally buy.
