Team Fortress 2
We can save quickplay, we have the technology.
I was reading the latest blog post, about the SDK release, and two lines stood out to me:
"TF2 mods may be published on the Steam Store, and after publication will appear as new games in the Steam game list" and
"To respect that, we're asking TF2 mod makers continue to respect that connection, and to not make mods that have the purpose of trying to profit off Workshop contributors' efforts. We're hoping that many mods will continue to allow players access their TF2 inventory, if this makes sense for the mod."

This means, theoretically, it would be possible to release a version of TF2 on steam, which had casual stripped out, quickplay reenabled/recreated, and kept player inventoried. It should even be possible to connect to vanilla tf2 servers, as long as those servers didn't have VAC enabled.

The VAC issue would probably be the biggest issue, as I can't imagine many community servers disabled VAC unless this community quick play got popular, and I can't imagine it getting popular without lots of community server support. But maybe I'm wrong. Thoughts?

Thats what im wondering, this could be huge, but it is actually possible to connect it to vanilla servers tho? I mean, i assume community servers for sure, but could it allow official Valve servers?

(Im not denying or confirming anything tho, im just asking)

Not without queuing in the casual matchmaker. And even then VAC would almost certainly stop you unless you went out of your way to bypass it, which is a bad idea.

probably not official, no

I imagine releasing all this is part of trying to get people to be less reliant on valve to begin with
I feel that the server browser is serving me well enough.
not having vac would just mean abunch of cheaters would join and ruin it

Yeah
I think recreating QP tf2 would be cool but this would just be peak botpocalypse of 2019-2021 all over again but with less players, more likely
this sounds way too impractical ngl

I was thinking that existing community run anti-cheats and moderation would be enough in most cases. Especially since community servers didn't have a bot issue during the bot crisis when VAC was useless.
I like it

Im assuming Valve is gonna have some type of limit on mods that will be added to the workshop. If someone does make something as simple as a "better queue system mod" then Valve would probably allow it to connect to vanilla servers because its such a simple change and its so wanted I dont see why it couldnt. Then again if they dont people probably would use it purely for community servers anyway.

Eh, that works too, vanilla community servers can be really good if well managed

It's not happening. Eric Smith has gone on record to say that Valve doesn't want to even revert a cosmetic from years ago because it's the Status Quo.

An entire matchmaking service (that the majority of TF2 players nowadays see as the only way they've played the game) being thrown out to try and return to an old system that also had it's problems because some old people say "trust me bro" is not gonna happen.

Literally, the only way it would even happen is if Valve got in the news for something bad involving it.

You know what we can do though?

Make casual better.

Allow spectating and free team switching.

Allow auto team scramble.

Turn the best 2/3 into a Map timer.

All that can be done with console commands, and it doesnt' even remove the stuff casual did right, like parties and the badge system, and the ability to queue for specific maps.

You didnt read the thread
With community servers in their current state, meaning almost no vanilla servers, I don't really see that happening. Not to be the bearer of bad news or anything, but community servers have been on a decline since 2013. So Valve servers became the go to way to play TF2 since 2014. Even now, Valve/Casual servers are still the main way most players would play TF2. They want what's most accessible and most vanilla like, which community servers don't offer anymore.
